RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie broke a bit of news about the BlackBerry Playbook at the live WEB 2.0 Summit. He described a “module cavity” that could be used for future Growth such as a WWAN chip to add more support to the WiFi only model. It was later suggested that it could be used for NFC, Near Field Communication, capabilities. NFC could be used for payment gateways, hotel room keys, or even headsets rendering Bluetooth obsolete. Balsillie stated “We’d be fools not to have it in the near-term, and we are not fools.”
