I was just thinking about this today since I am supposed to be eligible tomorrow. I originally had a Blackberry Flip on a 3 year contract and after 2 years, I am eligible for any smart phone. So I can go to Rogers tomorrow and get a Blackberry 9780 or an Iphone 4 if I wanted to, for the 3 year price. If I already had an Iphone on a 3 year contract, I would have to have to wait until the newly extended time of 30 months. You can pay the early upgrade fees to get it sooner though.
If I was 3 months away from the 2 year HUP and I wanted to get a Blackberry 9780 and I was currently using my Flip(or that was the last upgrade I had), I would pay $15×3 months + $49.99 (3 year contract)=$94.99 for the upgrade.
On the other hand, if I had an Iphone and wanted to buy the 9780, I would be paying out the “premium” smart phone cost. So if I was 6 months from the upgrade, it would be $20x6months +$49.99 = $169.99.
The old policy was every two years you would get a new phone, whereas now, you still have two years for non-premium and two and a half for premium. Currently, the Iphone and Blackberry Torch are listed as premium phones.
