FCC Plans to Bring “Next Generation” Messaging Services to 911

The Federal Communications Commission is planning to allow users to text and send multimedia messages to 911 emergency call centers. Chairman  of the FCC, Julius Genachowski, stated that the while it would seem improbable that America’s emergency response system is not already caught up with mobile technology. In September, the FCC will propose rules that will allow user to sending text messages, photos and videos to 911. The concern is the broadband infrastructure, of the US and the existing bandwidths could handle it such an influx of this type of service. This service doesn’t plan to be fully implement for the next 5 to 10 years. It will be nice to see the implementation of this “next generation” 911 service.
