UMA-WiFi Calling headed to T-Mobile Blackberry Bold 9900!

T-Mobile will be releasing an update for the Blackberry Bold 990 sometime in November. The update is said to contain UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) or WiFi calling!

From T-Mobile PR representative Kevin Wren:

  • A maintenance release from RIM is expected for the T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9900 in November 2011. That update will include Wi-Fi Calling functionality
  • With the update, the Bold 9900 will have Wi-Fi Calling performance and benefits similar to T-Mobile’s other Wi-Fi Calling-enabled BlackBerry devices.

I am not sure about others on T-Mobile, but I really could care less about having UMA on my Bold 9900. When I had my Bold 9700 and would either walk out of the WiFi range or walk into it while on the phone I would experience dropped calls all of the time. If you or someone you know has had this happen to them please feel free to leave us a comment!

Classic UMA is hardware based and hands off the call from Wifi to cell without interruption and without a charge against minutes. Software based Wifi calling drops rather than hands off the call. The carrier charges the call vs your minutes.
