Rumor: New mock up and potential specs for the first BBX BlackBerry “Superphone”

As you can see the title for this one starts with “rumor” so remember to take this all with a grain of salt.  According to N4BB the first BlackBerry BBX based superphone, the Colt, will potential resemble what you see in the pic.  The phone is expected to have a 1.2 GHz single core processor, as the dual-core processors are still proving to be a battery hog, however if a dual-core processor passes the requirements that RIM has put in place it could be a 1.5GHz version.

Now in terms of the screen it is expected to be a 900+ resolution so as to easily migrate PlayBook apps to the BBX phones.  It will also feature a 4″ or slightly larger screen, which really comes as no surprise considering what we are seeing on the Android side of things these days.  Now some of the new specs that N4BB has been told are,

  • thinner than the 990/9930
  • a similar stainless steel bezel to the 9900/9930
  • TAT transitions coupled with BBX
  • similar battery to the PlayBook (no more battery pulls)
  • no physical buttons
  • all swipe inner bezel
  • front and rear cameras with improved focus and flash
Now this is all said and good, but when can we expect to see this “dream BlackBerry” that is supposed to leapfrog RIM past the competition?  Realistically we won’t be seeing anything anytime soon.  We have it on good word that the first QNX powered BBX phone is still in early testing and that there is still a long way to go before it is ready for prime-time.  Hopefully we will see something at CES this year in January, but I am not holding my breath as I could foresee RIM holding out till BlackBerry World for such a large announcement.  RIM this is your chance to prove me wrong and get something ready for CES and make me a believer again, as recent news and delays of updates for the PlayBook have shaken my trust in you.  At CES you really must impress to keep this loyal and faithful fan.
