Indonesia Government Threatens to Stop BlackBerry Messenger

The Indonesian Telecommunication Body is upset with Research In Motion in an agreement that a new data center was to be built-in Indonesia, but now this data center is to be built-in Singapore instead. Indonesia government feels that they should have the data center should be established in their country. As a result Indonesian govern has threaten to stop BIS as well as BBM.

“Because RIM has not been cooperative, it is possible that we will soon end BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) and BBM service. BlackBerry therefore, would just be like other cellular phones,” BRTI member Heru Sutadi, The Jakarta Post

Without the server in Indonesia, officials feel they cannot monitor the services nor guarantee their security. “With the condition as it is now, we warn that the country’s users to be cautious about using BlackBerry because the data exchanged is not safe or cannot be guaranteed of its safety,” he said. It doesn’t seem that RIM will have to worry about the blocking of BIS in Indonesia but it will be interesting to see how this all turns out.
