Yesterday, I had the great pleasure of getting to attend BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour in Austin, Texas. When I arrived, I was greeted by many happy, smiling faces of RIM employees and I knew right then that I was going to have an amazing day full of everything BlackBerry 10 related. With the intention of checking in a little early before the keynote began, I got the opportunity to meet and mingle with BlackBerry, iOS and Android developers alike to see how they felt about the future of BlackBerry and especially BlackBerry 10.
While the number of attendees wasn’t quite as high as I had expected, the excitement for what’s to come of BB10 was evident. I loved getting to talk to developers about their plans for BB10, especially the ones that currently only develop for Android and iOS. By listening to their visions, I could honestly tell that they were truly excited about their plans for BlackBerry 10. From games, apps, themes and even hardware, BlackBerry 10 is going to change the face of the smartphone world.
I kid you not, the keynote literally gave me goosebumps. It was amazing to hear all about the happenings at Research in Motion from the primary source. I couldn’t help but smile while the presentation went on talking about everything that we can expect from BlackBerry 10. With all of the “bad” press RIM has been getting as of late, it was nice to see the stats of all the improvements BlackBerry is seeing. It’s apparent that, yes, BlackBerry may not be the leading smartphone in the United States, but in comparison to the number of countries where BlackBerry is at the top of the market, that’s really not saying much at all.
BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour is one fast paced event. Seeing as they compacted a couple days worth of information into one, the presentations go fast and it barely seemed like I was there for long at all. Regardless of the speed, I learned so much from the sessions I was able to attend and I know that the other developers got a lot out of the day as well. Needless to say, RIM’s effort to really put the future of BlackBerry into the public eye is going to pay off. I could tell that by the casual conversation the many different developers were having. It seemed to me that they all agreed that there’s going to be a major increase in interest and that if you get the chance to attend one of the events, it is most definitely worth your time, whether you develop for BlackBerry, Android, iOS or even if you’re just getting started.
One aspect of the day particularly stuck out to me; I was sitting beside a man who has only ever developed for iOS, was typing away on his iPhone and kept checking his email on his iPad but the moment I pulled out my PlayBook and begin swiping across the screen and making things happen that I’m sure baffled him, his interest rose tenfold. I got to show him how different things worked on the screen and I could tell that he was impressed from everything I was able to share. But that wasn’t the exact moment, it was when a RIM employee walked by and noticed him messing around with my PlayBook while surrounded by all of his iOS devices and stopped to chat for a few moments before telling the man, without hesitation, that the employee would make sure that he left BlackBerry 10 Jam with a PlayBook. And you know what? He did.
It’s that motivation and confidence that RIM has in their products that’s going to bring more developers in. RIM truly wants to show the world that developing for BlackBerry isn’t some crazy ridiculous hassle that’s not worthy of anyone’s time. Research in Motion knows that if you put the products in the developers hands, the possibilities become real and thus, endless in number.
So what should you expect from attending BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour? That’s easy. Inspiration, excitement, possibilities, but mostly an event that you’ll never forget.
