RIM Possibly Prepping to Split Company into Two Divisions

Last month Research In Motion hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital to “to assist the Company and our Board of Directors in reviewing RIM’s business and financial performance.” That being said it is now being reported that RIM is preparing to split the company into two different divisions, one will handle the smartphone and tablet area and the second will focus on their messaging solutions.

It is being rumored that the split would include s possible sale to two potential buyers Facebook and Amazon. Facebook is looking to produce their own smartphone so this buy would make sense for them. At this time these are just rumors churning on the interweds, nothing official from RIM. Please let us know what you think about this possible split/sale in the comments.

Let’s ask The Mighty Thor :

“I will not in anyway split this up or separate this into different businesses. Now on the licensing piece. I’m absolutely confident that BlackBerry 10 will prove itself as a platform. If there is requests coming towards Research In Motion to talk about licensing that platform to other companies I will entertain those discussions, I will listen, I will access the business opportunity for RIM and if it makes sense strategically and tactically to go down that path, and then I will make the decision together with the board. It’s not my focus one. My focus one is to strengthen RIM’s business based on that integrated approach.”
    ’nuff said.
