Way back in October we let you know that Research In Motion was planing on releasing a BlackBerry Messenger Money App, well the BBC is reporting that BBM Money will soon hit the market. The first country to get BBM Money will be Indonesia and from there other countries will start seeing it in BlackBerry Market.
So why launch BBM Money in Indonesia? Well it is one of RIM’s most strongest markets for BlackBerry smartphones. “Indonesia is very important for RIM,” Hastings Singh, the managing director of RIM’s South Asia operations, tells the BBC. “It’s a huge market for us – and it is a market that has grown significantly over the last few years. “[But] we definitely can’t be complacent. “So we are offering a new innovation – BBM Money which will be launched in Indonesia – first in the world – shortly. It is a peer-to-peer transfer service that anyone with a Blackberry phone can use to transfer funds to someone else with a Blackberry phone.”
Back in October RIM’s CEO Thorsten Heins spoke at a meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia and brought up BBM E-Commerce. “Think about transacting money. This is one element in which you could have a huge BBM population in Indonesia transferring money from one partner to another,” he said. Heins added that the heavy usage of BBM by BlackBerry smartphone owners in Indonesia made the country “so important” as an “innovation ground for BBM”.
