Samsung Trade-Ins Spike 275 Percent During BlackBerry 10  Launch

SellCell.com Finds  Consumers Dump Old Samsung and Apple Devices, Hold Onto BlackBerrys as Site  Activity Climbs

NEW YORK, February 7, 2013 – SellCell.com, the top cell phone recycling  price comparison site in the US, today released new statistics which show that  Samsung and Apple trade-ins spiked by 275 percent and 50 percent respectively,  during the highly-anticipated BlackBerry 10 launch last week. On January  30, 2013 (the day of the global BlackBerry 10 launch in New York City) data  fromSellCell.com shows that compared  to January 30, 2012:

  • Samsung device trade-ins spiked 275 percent;
  • Apple device trade-ins rose 50 percent;
  • BlackBerry device trade-ins fell 51 percent. BlackBerry trade-ins were also  down 61 percent compared to the average daily trade-ins in January 2013 before  January 30; and
  • Total activity on the site rose 22 percent.

Colin White, MD for SellCell.com, commented: “Consumers and  industry observers were keen to see what BlackBerry had in store with the launch  of the new Z10 and Q10 smartphones. Based on our early analysis of how the  launch impacted trade-ins, we’re noticing a distinct trend of heightened  smartphone trade-ins on the site by popular manufacturers like Samsung and Apple  while BlackBerry trade-ins decline. We expect that, based on positive early buzz  around the new BlackBerry 10 platform and our read of trade-in activity compared  to other high-profile product launches, many consumers using SellCell.com are  likely parting ways with older devices specifically to generate cash to purchase  a new BlackBerry 10 device.”

Despite the interest in the new platform, growth in site activity pales in  comparison to the spike around the recent Apple iPhone 5 launch. During the  month of the iPhone 5 launch (August 2012), site activity set records on SellCell.com as the site experienced 725  percent total growth over activity in August 2011.

“While we see definitive excitement around BlackBerry 10, it is clear to us  that BlackBerry still has a ways to go with reaching the level of enthusiasm  that accompanies trade-ins around an iPhone launch. For now though, the signs  appear to be pointing up once again for BlackBerry,” said White.

    Kinda strange that no one was trading in their 99x0s tho; maybe most BlackBerry people are waiting for the Qed?
