Sprint BlackBerry Q10 rumored to be unlocked when released

We have seen quite a bit of news and rumors come out from #BEF13 this week.  Today is there is a new rumor regarding the Sprint BlackBerry Q10.  According to a carrier rep the sprint version fo the Q10 will be shipping to customers unlocked.

Now that unlocking your cellphone in the US is technically illegal, a gesture like this is that much more important.  Sprint is apparently shipping the Q10 unlocked to allow their customers to use the device overseas if needed.  The carrier rep also pointed towards the device hitting shelves in late April or early May.

Hopefully we will see other US carriers follow Sprint’s lead on this one, if it is in fact true.

Forgive my ignorance, but what can I do with an unlocked Sprint phone? Take it to another CDMA carrier to use?

An increasing number of CDMA phones now have usable SIM slots that can accept SIMs for GSM carriers. It’s possible that there won’t be LTE connectivity (or even 3G) when using a GSM sim, depending on what bands the radio supports, but at a minimum 2G calls and texts will be guaranteed to work.

e.g. the Verizon iPhone 5 has an unlocked SIM slot so it will work fully on AT&T (2G and 3G with data) minus LTE.

CDMA phones use a built-in chip for calls and SMS via EVDO, but the SIM card is used for LTE access in new models. In the old days when data plans were almost non existent, CDMA phones had no SIM slot to use.
