As I was getting ready to head to bed last night @fortneyland95 sent me a link to this Reuters article titled ‘Exclusive: BlackBerry may put Android system on new device: sources’. After reading the article it hit me this may seem crazy, but it could actually work. The shift to Android would allow BlackBerry to focus on software and device management, just what BlackBerry wants. Now, with that being said I have heard rumors that if BlackBerry does in fact make this shift QNX would still exist in the background while the Android OS would be running up front. Doing this would offer a more secure ‘Android’ device.
BlackBerry () is considering equipping an upcoming smartphone with Google Inc.’s (GOOGL.O) Android software for the first time, an acknowledgement that its revamped line of devices has failed to win mass appeal, according to four sources familiar with the matter.
The sources, who asked not to be named as they have not been authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said the move to use Android is part of BlackBerry’s strategy to pivot to focus on software and device management. BlackBerry, which once dominated smartphone sales, now has a market share of less than 1 percent.
Reuters asked for a comment; BlackBerry said that it is still committed to BlackBerry 10. Keep in mind this is just a rumor and noting is set in stone. Sound off in the comments!
