This update is currently available in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. What’s new? “When free memory gets too low, it could lead to a degraded user experience. Now, when memory reaches a permanent low level, Application Resource Monitor will provide you with a list of easy intelligent actions you can take to free up memory in one fell swoop. These actions include uninstalling unused applications, deleting or moving large media and document files, and deleting old text and email messages.”

In an interview that Saunders had with CNET, he was very clear how BlackBerry users view Android ports.

“From a commercial perspective, users hate them,” said Alec Saunders, head of developer relations at BlackBerry. “Our partners who have ported apps get dinged for them.”

Many of us are hoping that the update to the Android Runtime will make these ports work better.  However the best possible solution is that developers realize there is momentum with BlackBerry 10 and make a native app.  We have already seen evidence of this happening with Songza, so hopefully other developers will see this move to native apps.

Two of the big names that are still missing are Netflix and Instagram.  Luckily Instagram has announced that they will be supporting BlackBerry 10, however Netflix doesn’t seem to have any intention of doing so.  This has been reinforced even more by a recent interview Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings, gave to CTV News.  Hastings made it very clear he believes BlackBerry 10 doesn’t have enough users to warrant them making an official app.

Here is what Hastings had to say in the interview,

CP: You’ve been quoted as saying that you’re always trying out a new smartphone or tablet to keep up on new technology. Have you tried one of the new BlackBerry 10 devices yet?

Hastings: No. Like many people I was a BlackBerry addict from 1997 or 1998 through to the iPhone but I haven’t tried it. We don’t currently support streaming on the BlackBerry, it’s a unique operating system you have to target, and unfortunately there’s just not enough volume for entertainment (apps). It’s a great device for getting work done but people don’t interact with it as an entertainment device the same way they do with say an iPhone or Android phone.

While we hope that Netflix changes their mind and eventually makes an official app, we aren’t going to hold our breath.
