What a very enjoyable weekend I had! I just got back to Houston from Good ole’ Austin Texas, where SXSW is in full swing! I had the opportunity to swing by The BlackBerry House on Rainey St in Austin. Boy was I impressed with the layout and the things going on there. I arrived on scene around noon yesterday so there was not a ton of people around (everyone was showing up fashionably late), before too long I would say there was a 100 to 150 people there. As some would leave more would come, which enabled me to take a bunch of photos for all of you that did not get to go a chance to attend.  Check out more as well as the images after the break!

During the drive to Austin, I thought it would be a great chance to use BlackBerry Navigator. I will do a full review on the application itself in a few days, but I did want to note that it worked great. BlackBerry Navigator was spot on and never got me lost. Now while I was there I did swing by and see Slacker Radio. Man, did they have a crazy setup (you can check out the images below for Slacker as well). Let’s get back to The BlackBerry House, I finally had the chance to meet Alex Kinsella in person for the first time ( I have talked to him over BBM many times) he is truly a dedicated BlackBerry guy!

After talking to people around the BlackBerry House, it seems as though people are genuinely excited about BlackBerry 10 and the BlackBerry Z10. Some did voice their concerns about Sprint not carrying the BlackBerry Z10 and only carring the BlackBerry Q10, but other then that everyone wanted to know when and where they could get the Z10. Personally I think the Z10 is going to do extremely well after seeing people’s faces while getting a demo of the BlackBerry Z10.

BlackBerry demoed everything with the device from the brand new Time Shift camera (which is amazing) to the OS as a whole. As you can see in the images below the BlackBerry Experience van was also on hand helping with the demo’s of the BlackBerry Z10. The BlackBerry Z10′s in the van were actually T-Mobile branded devices however, they were running on AT&T’s network…  I found this extreamly interesting. While speaking with one gentlemen who was offering demos of the device he let me know that the van will be hitting 20 different markets here in Texas, he could not give me exact cities but did say where ever the good parties are, the van will be there too! Here we are in December already… Where did the time go??? We here at NerdBerry want to celebrate the holidays in a HUGE way! Starting today and ending on December 23 we are going to be running a Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!! We have TWO BlackBerry prize packs up for grabs. The two prize packs consist of one T-Mobile Branded BlackBerry Bold 9900 and one 32GB BlackBerry PlayBook!! We have put a lot of thought in to this contest and we have come up with the Holiday Photo Contest!

How do you enter? Of course you MUST do the regular stuff  such as – “Like” our Facebook page, Follow us on Twiter, Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and leave a comment letting us know the top three have been completed…

Because this is such a huge contest we are going to throw in one more thing, don’t fret it is not hard.  All you have to do is take a picture of your current smartphone next to your favorite holiday item such as your Christmas tree, favorite food, favorite ornament, favorite holiday movie, etc.. Send it in to us with a caption explaining why you chose that particular holiday item. Remember be creative, get your family involved after all it is the holidays and most of all have fun doing it!

On December 24th the NerdBerry team will post all of the photo’s and captions received and we will announce the two winners on December 25, 2012.

FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certification provides confidence to security-conscious organizations, including U.S. and Canadian government agencies, companies in regulated industries and other organizations dealing with sensitive information, that data stored on smartphones running BlackBerry 10 can be properly secured and encrypted.

“Achieving FIPS 140-2 certification means that BlackBerry 10 is ready to meet the strict security requirements of government agencies and enterprises at launch,” said Michael K. Brown, Vice President, Security Product Management and Research at RIM. “What differentiates BlackBerry is that it integrates end-to-end security, and includes certified encryption algorithms for data at rest and data in transit. No other mobile solution has achieved the level of security accreditation that the BlackBerry solution has.”

FIPS 140 is issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to coordinate the requirements and standards for certifying cryptographic modules. The standard was developed through the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP), which certifies products for use by U.S. government agencies and regulated industries that collect, store, transfer, share and disseminate sensitive information. Product certifications under the CMVP are performed in accordance with the requirements of FIPS 140-2. It is supported by the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) for the Canadian government.

According to OSBB Chris Wade (another dev behind DingleBerry) is working on porting his own iOS emulator, iEmu, to the PlayBook. No this is huge news for all of you PlayBook owners out there , but at this time it does not look like this will be released to the public. Why you ask well, seeing that Apple is a big hater when it comes to things like this you can bet your butt that they will figure out a way to block this. Version 4.0 was said to bring the following:

• Improved USB Host script to cater for when USB folder is already created.
• Improved unified login to cope with when BDM has spammed.
• Allows root on any future firmware including 2.0.0.7111 and 2.0.0.7971.
• Allows loading of custom firmware and true permanent modification of /base.

It looks like RIM may have one this round and RIM’s BBSIRT is now able to take a break. Is anyone out there still rooted? Let us know in the comments!

“Jailbreaking”, or gaining root access to a device, has become common place in both the mobile and gaming industries. Essentially, gaining this deeper level of access to the core functions of the device allows the user to do things not originally intended by a manufacturer, such as install software outside of “official” channels. Unfortunately, gaining this level of root access may increase the security risk. For this reason, most device manufacturers, including RIM, strongly discourage jailbreaking while understanding that whole communities exist for just that purpose. At RIM, we take these issues very seriously. Let’s walk through how we assess and respond to jailbreaking reports.”

I’m Adrian Stone, and I am the Director of the BlackBerry Security Incident Response Team (BBSIRT) here at Research In Motion. The BBSIRT is responsible for responding to potential security issues and investigating vulnerability claims that may impact RIM’s products. Security is a priority for our customers, and that’s why I’ll be contributing regularly to this blog. For my first post, I want to provide some insight into how we investigate and respond to jailbreak-related reports.

“Jailbreaking”, or gaining root access to a device, has become common place in both the mobile and gaming industries. Essentially, gaining this deeper level of access to the core functions of the device allows the user to do things not originally intended by a manufacturer, such as install software outside of “official” channels. Unfortunately, gaining this level of root access may increase the security risk. For this reason, most device manufacturers, including RIM, strongly discourage jailbreaking while understanding that whole communities exist for just that purpose. At RIM, we take these issues very seriously. Let’s walk through how we assess and respond to jailbreaking reports.

From a user perspective, there are two primary ways to jailbreak a device. First, there is the method where the user voluntarily makes changes that require: a) the device to be tethered to a computer; b) access to an authorized user account on the device; and c) may even require the user to make changes to the device’s default settings by putting it into developer mode (which can also compromise security). This method cannot be used by remote attackers to compromise user data or the integrity of the device as it requires both possession of the device and valid user credentials for the device. The second method involves less interaction on the user’s part. For example, a software bug may be exploited from a web page to gain root access to any mobile device and not require any interaction from the user except visiting the page.

On hearing reports of a jailbreak for a BlackBerry® product, the BBSIRT will quickly triage the underlying issue and method used to perform the jailbreak. If it falls into the first category, where extensive user interaction is required, we will seek to address it in a future software update. If it falls into the second category (where a vulnerability is exposed with little to no user interaction), that is an indication of a more serious underlying issue and will most likely result in the release of a security update to address it as soon as possible. When this happens, my team publishes a security advisory or notice. These notifications typically offer an assessment of the issue and the required steps customers should take to resolve the vulnerability.

To be clear, RIM recommends against installing any jailbreaking tool. Customers who use a jailbreaking tool on BlackBerry products void the manufacturer warranty and also increase the long-term risk of negatively impacting the stability and user experience of their BlackBerry products. Use of a jailbreaking tool could also amplify the impact and severity of a future security issue, making your personal data more vulnerable to theft and more difficult to protect. If new jailbreaks for BlackBerry products are reported, rest assured that we will evaluate them and take appropriate action to help protect customers.

But the best actions you can take to protect your BlackBerry products are also pretty simple to follow: 1) keep your BlackBerry software up to date; 2) don’t install jailbreaking tools; and 3) don’t install software from unauthorized or unverified sources.
