During the keynote at BlackBerry Live this week BlackBerry announced that they were bringing BBM to iOS and Android. This announcement rocked the world as BlackBerry Messenger or BBM as it is commonly called has only been on BlackBerry. Some of the people we spoke with at Live had mixed reactions to the announcement. All in all BlackBerry has made the decision to go cross-platform. HootSuite Hints at New App for BlackBerry Users

Some of you might have gotten the email from HootSuite stating that they would be releasing a new version of their popular Twitter client in the near future. Within the email they state that Twitter will be shutting down the 1.0 API that HootSuite uses to power their app.

The date for the shut down is scheduled to be May 7th and it looks like HootSuite is being proactive in the resolution to the issue and will be taking registrations for their new “mobile-optimized” wep app. From what we can see from the email it looks like the beta is an invitation only release and current users might have a bit of an edge when it comes to registering for the HTML 5 based beta.

Some of the features that are slated for the new release are:

- Will work on most recent iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows devices

- Can access your streams and tabs from anywhere

- Ensures a secure social media experience

- Advanced users will be able to use the new app for monitoring customer feedback, tracking clients and keywords across multiple platforms.

A quick search thru App World yields no mention of a BB10 compatible app, and the HTML 5 might be what they are waiting to deploy to BB10 users. HootSuite tweeted that the new app will function on BB10 devices, but if you cannot wait you have the ability to side load the bar file to your Z10 and have a functioning version of the app before it is officially supported by Blackberry and HootSuite.

Secure Workspace coming to iOS and Android devices via BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10.1

Earlier today some features and information on the upcoming BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10.1 got leaked out. Upon closer inspection Ronen over at Berryreview noticed something interesting for companies that run a BYOD policy for their employees. It looks like BES 10.1 will provide IT admins with the ability to set up a secure workspace within iOS and Android devices that go through the BES via Mobile Fusion.

While BlackBerry used to dominate the enterprise market, more and more companies are switching over to a BYOD policy and therefore are having to deal with security on iOS and Android, BES 10.1 should alleviate many concerns. As Ronen puts it,

This will sort of be like Good and Touchdown on steroids with your work email, contacts, calendar, notes, tasks, and internal browser inside a secure container. Companies will also be able to push out business apps that can run inside this container though I am not sure if they will be native apps. On top of that the secure container and apps installed through it will have access to your corporate network without a VPN which is key for battery life. They will work through BlackBerry’s NOC data centers and will connect back to your BES 10 and mail servers that way like legacy BlackBerrys.

These types of moves are essential for BlackBerry to remain a strong force within the enterprise market. Keeping companies on a BES even though they may have a lot of users moving away from BlackBerry will help keep revenue flowing into the company.

BES 10.1 is expected to be coming sometime in May, so these new secure workspaces within iOS and Android will be coming very shortly.

BlackBerry announces Secure Work Space for both iOS and Android devices

One of the huge benefits of BlackBerry 10 for enterprise customers is the addition of BlackBerry Balance. Now this really comes into play if your company follows a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy. However a BYOD policy can be a headache for IT admins if they are having to manage BlackBerry, iOS and Android devices all at the same time. This is where Secure Work Space will com into play.

With Secure Work Space, BlackBerry is providing IT admins an easy and secure way to run both iOS and Android devices integrated with BES 10. BlackBerry has this to say about the introduction of Secure Work Space,

We recently announced that we will be offering Secure Work Space for iOS and Android to our enterprise customers. Secure Work Space will separate corporate data from personal data on iOS and Android devices in order to protect corporations, and to ensure personal privacy of employees. Secure Work Space will be managed through BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and will secure data at rest and in transit. We plan to offer a Beta program to our enterprise customers in the very near future. We will share details on availability soon.

Coming To BlackBerry 10 From Android, iPhone Or Even BlackBerry? Here Is How To Transfer Your Data

Normally transferring all your precious data, apps and contacts from one BlackBerry to another is a simple task. Well with BlackBerry 10 it is a new operating system, and there are some new procedures that you might not be aware of. And for those of you coming back into the fold from Android or iOS, BlackBerry has you covered as well.

You always want your transfer to go off without a glitch otherwise you have to re-enter all your contacts and calendar entries which for some of us that can be a full-time job. So luckily BlackBerry has taken it upon themselves to put up some awesome “how-to’s” for getting it all done. Now of course those of use switching over from a BlackBerry 7 device will have the easiest time, but there still doesn’t appear to be any Microsoft Outlook Sync, however wireless Gmail, Yahoo and other types of accounts are syncing very nicely.

Buffer Now Available For BlackBerry 10

There have been a ton of apps ported over to BlackBerry 10 from both Android and iOS in the last few weeks. Now some of these apps will be good, but there will be some that probably won’t make it onto your device. Well Buffer is one of the apps that I am guessing a lot of people will be using on their BlackBerry 10 devices. The app lets you stage updates for all your social networks, this means that you will not flood timelines all at once when you have something to share.

The Inside BlackBerry DevBlog has a nice post up about the benefits of Buffer and how it was brought to the BlackBerry 10 platform. Even without BlackBerry 10 being commercially available they have seen a great response to their app, check out what they had to say.

Mobile Fusion Apps Get renamed In Both Google Play and iOS App Store

BlackBerry BES 10 was officially released today, and in conjunction with that release the Mobile Fusion apps in both the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store were renamed. If you remember correctly the Mobile Fusion Client apps were built to allow users to use their personal devices remotely with the BlackBerry Enterprise Servers.

it does not appear that there is actually anything new in the apps, rather that RIM decided to rename them to place them in line with the branding of BlackBerry 10. You can download the respective client apps from the links below.

RIM posts guidelines for developers looking to port iOS and Android NDK apps to BlackBerry 10
