It’s really cool to see something like this that will actually be for sale. I am not a fan of concept cars, with concept ideas that are never built. Being able to use your smart phone to update the software is just the beginning of what it can do. And hopefully it will pave the way for more cars to have these capabilities.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO and TOKYO, JAPAN–(Marketwired – May 7, 2013) - QNX Software Systems Limited and Renesas Electronics Corporation today announced that they are integrating support for the Renesas R-Car SoC (system on chip) platform into the QNX CAR™ application platform to help automotive companies reduce the time and effort of building advanced infotainment systems. As part of their growing collaboration, the companies also announced that QNX Software Systems is joining the Renesas R-Car consortium, a partner program designed to help drive rapid development of next-generation in-car solutions, and to provide enhanced support for automakers and tier 1 automotive suppliers.

The Renesas R-Car SoC series offers a high-performance platform for a broad range of low-end to high-end car infotainment systems, including dashboard-mounted navigation units. The R-Car series provides enhanced multimedia processing for audio and video, advanced 3D graphics, as well as image recognition and other driver-assistance functions. These enhancements make the second-generation R-Car series ideally suited for the development of next-generation automotive infotainment systems. In March 2013, Renesas released R-Car H2, the first second-generation R-Car processor. QNX and Renesas intend to include support for the H2 as part of their ongoing collaboration.

The QNX CAR application platform for infotainment systems supports a rich set of pre-integrated technologies, both from QNX Software Systems and from dozens of ecosystem partners. This pre-integrated platform, based on QNX^® technology proven in tens of millions of vehicles, enables automotive customers to hit the ground running and reduce the time required to build connected, media-rich infotainment systems.

7digital’s HTML5 global digital music store has been integrated within the QNX CAR platform. This integration allows automotive manufacturers and OEMs to build digital music stores directly into QNX-powered in-car infotainment systems.

The HTML5 store’s UI matches 7digital’s existing web and mobile store, already available in over 40 countries. Users of the integrated stores will be able to browse, preview and purchase music within their car, as well as access their existing collection already stored in 7digital’s cloud-based Locker. This will extend the 7digital connected-device experience to the car.

The QNX CAR platform for infotainment systems is based on QNX® technology deployed in millions of cars on the road today. Most of the world’s major automotive manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, and Toyota, ship cars with QNX-based infotainment systems.

The integration has been completed using the 7digital Application Programming Interface (API), which allows 7digital’s partners and developers to build digital music stores into existing products and services using 7digital’s technology platform. The QNX CAR platform is available now to automotive companies wanting to build a native HTML5 music application store within car infotainment systems.

Digia – Digia will demonstrate the latest release of the Qt application & UI framework, Qt 5, running on a Freescale i.MX 6 quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor. The demo, “Qt 5 on the QNX platform – a Cinematic Experience,” will show many of the new Qt 5 Qt Quick 2 graphics features, such as particles, sprites path animation, and custom shaders, all within a native application where maximum performance can be extracted from the underlying hardware. Freescale and koenig-pa will demonstrate a PLC reference platform that integrates koenig-pa EtherCAT protocol software, ISaGRAF PLC firmware, and the QNX Neutrino RTOS on a Freescale dual-core QorIQ P1025 processor.
