Rogers Makes Change To Upgrade Fee

Coming days after the CRTC new rules, this one actually only affects Rogers subscribers who got a subsidized phone prior to Jan 22, 2012. A lot of people have probably updated after that or the upgrade fee is pretty low if you haven’t upgraded since before that date.

Rogers new upgrade fee has increased. So if you want to upgrade your phone before your contract ends, you will be paying a bit more. It used to be $13 a month for smart phones and has now increased to $20. How ever many months you have left in the contract times $20 will be how much you have to pay off before you can sign to a new contract.

If your phone falls in the smart phone lite category, the price per month stays the same, at $10.

Rogers is expanding their LTE Max coverage

If you are a Rogers customer and picked up a Blackberry Q10, you may have received the model that takes advantage of the 2600Mhz radio frequency. This of course puts you on the LTE Max network that Rogers has begun to roll out, with theoretical speeds of up to 150Mbps (you will never see those numbers in reality).

Rogers is now expanding the coverage of their LTE Max network to the following areas,

La Baie, QC
Victoriaville, QC
Expanding coverage in Quebec City and Trois-Rivieres
Saint John, NB
Parksville, BC
Expanding coverage in Victoria, BC
Halifax Expansion, NS

I am using a Q10 on the LTE Max network and I have noticed that my speeds are much faster than I was getting on my Z10 on Rogers. On average I am getting anywhere from 45-55Mbps down while in town where the coverage is the best, where as I am getting closer to 25-30Mbps on my Z10 in the same place. Hopefully we will see Rogers continue to expand their LTE Max network to more and more cities.

CRTC Makes Some Big Changes That Are Actually Beneficial To Canadian Wireless Consumers

The CRTC has gone and made some major changes to how cell phones and contracts will be handled in Canada.

One of the major points that I like about the new rules, is that you can terminate your contract after two years with no cancellation fees. You would only owe what is left on the device itself.

As a Canadian wireless user, I find certain things to be kind of unfair to the consumer. One of them being, the 3 year contract. Pretty much every mobile telecom here does 3 years. And I swear, we must be the last country on the planet that does. Yes, I know that we have less people per square inch, spread across this huge land. But 3 years is a long time. One could argue that it is the subsidy of the phone that makes it cheaper in the end. But I think if the two year contract cost was a little higher, it would work out better in the end. Contacts like this suck, when you run into problems and the only way out is to pay. Two years is a respectable number.

To clarify though, the CRTC isn’t saying that Rogers, Telus, Bell,etc, have to do away with 3 year contracts. Just that at two years, you won’t have to pay those dreaded fees they charge for canceling the contract. Most of them now let you pay off a tab.

New rules:
Terminate their wireless contracts after two years without cancellation fees, even if they have signed on for a longer term.
Cap extra data charges at $50 a month and international data roaming charges at $100 a month to prevent bill shock.
Have their cellphones unlocked after 90 days, or immediately if they paid for the device in full.
Return their cellphones, within 15 days and specific usage limits, if they are unhappy with their service.
Accept or decline changes to the key terms of a fixed-term contract (i.e., two-year), and receive a contract that is easy to read and understand.

The new rules don’t come into effect until December 2 2013. And that is only new contracts.

Videotron and Rogers sign 20 year Agreement

Larger carriers are always looking for ways to improve their footprint for their customers and one way to do so is to partner with the local carriers for roaming agreements in areas that they are not very strong.

Rogers just did the exact thing by partnering with Videotron, they have signed a 20 year deal that will allow Rogers to user their specific footprint to increase their presence as well as help Videotron build out the LTE network that they will both use. In addition to the partnership, Videotron will sell the remainder of their unused AWS spectrum to Rogers for $180 Million.

Official: OS 10.1.0.1720 for the BlackBerry Q10 rolling out on Rogers, Bell and TELUS

Rogers, Bell and TELUS are all rolling out OS 10.1.0.1720 for the BlackBerry Q10. This OS update is coming in at 127MB in size. This update is showing as the same version number already installed, but you should update anyway as it may help fix any issues you may be having at this time. There is no word on what has changed so id you see something different let us know in the comments!

So the day has finally arrived and the BlackBerry Q10 has been released in Canada. After only a few minutes with the device I can say that this is the BlackBerry that many of you have been waiting for. The keyboard is rock solid, and combined with BlackBerry 10 this makes for an awesome phone for people who prefer that traditional BlackBerry experience.
