South African carriers Vodacom and MTN have already stated that they will be discontinuing their unlimited BBM plans as of May 31st of this year.  That is a mere 3 months after the launch of the BlackBerry Z10 in South Africa, and there have been some angry responses to the carriers decisions to limit what will be covered under the unlimited BBM plans.

The unlimited internet access that has been a popular part of BlackBerry package deals in emerging markets has fostered heavy data volume growth. It is now being phased out by South African carriers. Things like BBM Voice and BBM Screen Sharing are completely excluded from Vodacom’s Unlimited BBM offer and file-sharing is capped.

It will be interesting to see if this move away from unlimited plans has an adverse affect on the popularity of BlackBerry 10 in these emerging markets.  We have seen carriers in other parts of the world, like Rogers in Canada, offer up temporary unlimited BBM Video call promotions to entice customers to sign up for a BlackBerry Z10.

We will have to wait and see if customers in these merging markets continue to migrate towards BlackBerry 10 devices  and whether or not we see any issues in the US when BlackBerry 10 devices finally launch in America.

Here we are in December already… Where did the time go??? We here at NerdBerry want to celebrate the holidays in a HUGE way! Starting today and ending on December 23 we are going to be running a Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!! We have TWO BlackBerry prize packs up for grabs. The two prize packs consist of one T-Mobile Branded BlackBerry Bold 9900 and one 32GB BlackBerry PlayBook!! We have put a lot of thought in to this contest and we have come up with the Holiday Photo Contest!

How do you enter? Of course you MUST do the regular stuff  such as – “Like” our Facebook page, Follow us on Twiter, Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and leave a comment letting us know the top three have been completed…

Because this is such a huge contest we are going to throw in one more thing, don’t fret it is not hard.  All you have to do is take a picture of your current smartphone next to your favorite holiday item such as your Christmas tree, favorite food, favorite ornament, favorite holiday movie, etc.. Send it in to us with a caption explaining why you chose that particular holiday item. Remember be creative, get your family involved after all it is the holidays and most of all have fun doing it!

Submit your photos via email to info@nerdberry.net Using the subject “Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!”.  Photo’s must be received by no later then December 23rd 2012. On December 24th the NerdBerry team will post all of the photo’s and captions received and we will announce the two winners on December 25, 2012.

Jannie van Zyl, who is a data lead at Vodacom, said:
As a matter of fact we’ve got capacity on our links. If you run very big pipes you often get upstream bottlenecks, and we have seen that once or twice over the last couple of months. Our link to RIM currently is, I think, 2.3 or 2.5 gigabits. It’s a massive link and it’s not running at full capacity.”

There has been concern that Vodacom had been throttling their data and he wanted to make sure that their users knew that they were not doing that.

He also said:

“The fact that you get a worry-free internet experience in terms of not having to manage your data consumption and your cap and so on is what drove BlackBerry.”

“Unfortunately, the proposition [has] changed a lot over the years. When we launched BIS originally, together with the other operators worldwide, it was really an email service – you could do your email, you could do your instant messaging, BBM came along and it was still all about messaging and it all worked very well.”
