Well look at what has appeared in the BlackBerry Vendor Portal for the BlackBerry PlayBook! It seems BlackBerry has published BlackBerry PlayBook 10.1 OS update as 10.1 support right there in the Vendor Portal. You will be able to find this in the Vendor Portal by creating or updating your application and then the supported version of BlackBerry 10! This could mean that the Blackberry PlayBook will be getting OS 10.1 in the near feature or it could be just a typo, You be the judge and let us know what you think in the comments.

Sector Strike has been out for a while, but some people are just discovering it. A help strategy guide is now available and you can read the whole thing here. The game is playable for the Playbook and the Z10. Read the strategy guide below.

Strategy Guide:

Sector Strike is a hit multi-platform side scrolling space shooter smartphone and tablet game by Clapfoot Inc. The game’s simple gameplay and straightforward levelling of your ship is as rewarding as it is difficult: A winning combination.

How to play:
1-Shoot bad guys and earn currency
2-Upgrade your ship and clear sectors
3-Repeat if desired

Gameplay in a Nutshell: The upgrade powerups that come among with the coins give you an extra hit point, but only one extra hit point even if your weapon’s level is at 4. Every 5th sector is a hard one so don’t feel bad if you die 10 times in a row on level 50 Hardcore Mode. Oh yeah, there’s 2 flavors of hardcore modes after you stomp the first 60 sectors over 4 futuristic perspective-laden backgrounds. In BlackBerry World it’s rated 4.5 stars which is about where is should be: a legitimately awesome mobile space shooter with rewarding long-term play.

Weapons and Powerups and Upgrades Explained:
There’s not a whole lot to screw up in terms of upgrades. You can get the basics like tractor beam, and critical hit, but your main goal is to work your way to the Higgs Shielding. The shield gives you an extra hit in-game, recharges after a short time and is all but required equipment when going into the game’s second play through AKA Hardcore mode. Higgs Shielding is by far the most important upgrade of the game. I find the recharge rate quick enough to only have paid for the first upgrade. Your ship is crazy fast and you should not be afraid to move your finger faster than the game allows the ship to move.

The different ship skins cost of lot of coins, do they do anything for you in-game?
No, they just look pretty. I bought the 2000 coin one and I love how the skin transforms the splash page. Everybody else has a stinky old blue ship but I’ve got a shiny red ship with flames on it: Badass.

Glossary of Enemies:
The moron-managed alien space fleet consists of crude single-purpose ships that team up to form especially difficult to defeat teams. The only thing you have to advance is not to blow your space dollars on useless upgrades.

The Drones: Drones fly slowly in a variety of formations and fire a slow bullet directly at you. they tank damage such that you’ll just barely be able to kill them all with your primary weapon alone. With powerups grunts are easily dispatched and pose almost no threat.

If you find yourself dying to an enemy Drone it’s a sign that you need a break from Sector Strike.

Grunt

The Interceptor: Accompany grunts, are a bit smaller and do a lot of fancy formations like loops, rows and the flying V to try to ram your ship.

The Fighter: This fires three bullets along the same lines of fire that your ship can shoot with your positron cannon. Just bob and weave between their slow projectiles until they’re destroyed. If there’s a lot going on on the screen, save the fighters for last as they are probably the hardest to kill and the least of a threat.

Green

The Rocketeer: This unit is only a treat when combined with other units. Often times the problem with them being on the field is that they’re tanking your shots giving the real threat more time to gun you down.

The Destroyer: This is the first ship that scared the crap out of me. fires bullets extremely fast but targets you a moment before it fires. This enemy is especially lethal when combined with any other unit. But easily defeated by not making jerky movements and always keeping your ship on the move.

The Sentry: The dreaded sentry spits out tons of bullets at a furious pace in all directions. When you read in the Sector Strike info it says “survive bullet dodging hell”, this is the unit they were talking about. When you come to a wave of Sentries without your powerups prepare yourself for bullet dodging hell but more likely death.

The Carrier: Carriers are not dangerous alone and they are never alone. Every unit type gets thrown in with the carrier and it all spells pain. The interceptors from the carrier kamikaze into your ship so fast that if you don’t focus all your attention on killing them before they kill you. The carrier itself also shields fleets of cruisers. Suddenly units that you thought were non-threatening before gain a certain fearsomeness when the carrier is on the field.

Gold Rocketeer: The same as the Rocketeer except this thing tracks for way longer making it a real threat. The missile can be outrun by you moving round the map but the Gold Rocketeer appears on later levels when they want to ramp up the difficulty.

The Phase-Boot: Not much to mention here other than they cannot be hit while they are using their phase cloak. To cope with it simply fire at the non-cloaked ships while you wait for the cloaked ones to reveal themselves. Also watch out for their explosion after they get taken out. The name has got to be a typo, for the record I think the proper name is Phase-Bot.

The game can be played on the Z10 or the Playbook. Sounds like a neat game, I like the matching type games. It looks a little scientic in the preview photo. There is a free version, give that one a shot. Or grab the paid version.

• Install DingleBerry & DDPB/Some form of sideloading BAR software
• Download the 10.0.9.44 Dev Alpha OS from here
• Change your PC and PlayBook date to September 24 2012 – Also turn off your Playbook’s WiFi
• Enable Dev Mode on your PlayBook
• Extract the Winchester SDK coreOS BAR file from the 10.0.9.44 folder and place it in the Dingleberry/Firmware/custom folder
• Connect your PlayBook to your PC 7. Open Dingleberry and enter your Dev Mode password into the field in top left
• On Dingleberry, select Firmware and Make sure the Buttons say Custom & Core OS
• Check that your PlayBook is detected by Dingleberry (top right corner)
• Click update at the bottom
• The device should have an update screen – if not make sure it is connected and try again. If it fails to install, simply disconnect, reconnect and try flashing again.
• If successful, the Playbook will reboot itself – When it comes alive, enable dev mode again and sideload (using DDPB or similar) the Settings app, BBM, Browser, Camera, AppWorld
• Reboot your device
• When it comes back on – go to the NEW Settings app and change your date and time to be correct
• Enable WiFi
• Go to Settings>BB ID and check that it retrieves info/allows you to sign in – if so, you’re good to go – if not, reflash back to 2.1 (using Dektop Manager) and repeat
• Enjoy BBM and AppWorld – Browser and Camera will work whether your BB ID works or not

Known issues: DO NOT allow your battery to die while running this OS. The device will not know to turn itself off before the battery completely drains. If it does drain, you will have to perform a stacked charge. It will be difficult to revive your PlayBook if this happens. AppWorld currently only pulls PlayBook apps. It does not pull BB10 apps. The icons in the top right corner of the home screen are inaccessible. Rotation Lock, Bluetooth, WiFi, and Battery indicator icons do not work, though oddly enough, the Settings icon does work. The backlight appears to timeout much quicker than the length of time defined in the settings. And finally, DO NOT power off your PlayBook with the current date and time. If you need to turn your PlayBook off, roll the date back to September 24 2012.

Getting Started
The first thing you will notice when you boot up BB10 on your PlayBook is that it still contains the Tablet OS style UI. That means no active frames, no BlackBerry Hub, and unforunately the incredible BlackBerry 10 virtual keyboard is also absent. Now you may ask, “If all of these great features are missing, what’s the point in having this OS?” The point is that BlackBerry 10 has native cascades support.

App Performance
Since we have only been testing this OS for less than 48 hours, we haven’t yet had the chance to install or test many apps. So far, I can confirm this:

Browser – The BB10 Browser does work, but there are a few minor bugs. For instance, when typing a website address into the address bar, the keyboard covers the text input box, and you cannot see what you are typing. This keyboard bug is consistent across many other apps as well, including BBM. The Bookmarks page also fails to load.

BBM – BlackBerry Messenger is functional on this device/OS. The UI is very smooth and (almost) everything appears to work just fine. I was able to have a few conversations on BBM and the only minor annoyance I encountered was not being able to set a display picture (as well as the keyboard bug mentioned above). NOTE: The OS is currently experiencing an issue retrieving my BlackBerry ID, therefore BBM is no longer working on my device. I am working on a fix for this issue and will keep you updated.

BlackBerry World – Due to the BlackBerry ID issues mentioned above, BlackBerry World also fails to load. I did not have a chance to test this app before the issues began, so unfortunately I cannot yet confirm whether or not this app works. I will be working on a fix for this issue in the coming days.

BB10 Settings app – This app is hit-and-miss. Certain options work, others don’t. Thanks to the Tablet OS UI, you can just swipe down from the top bezel to access the OS2 style Settings page whenever you need to.

Camera – The BB10 camera does work. I was able to take a few pictures with it without any issues. Normal camera mode, video recording, and Time Shift are all functional.

Contacts – Unfortunately the Contacts app does not function properly. It opens in landscape mode, and initially seems like it will work, but the problems begin when you try to add a contact. The top bar gets stretched too far across the screen, and the ‘Save’ button is not visible. Without that button, you can’t add a contact.

Calendar – The calendar app loads, and seems pretty smooth, but the UI gets stretched a bit too much when viewing the month tab.

Known Issues
In this particular build, the icons in the top right corner of the home screen are inaccessible. Rotation Lock, Bluetooth, WiFi, and Battery indicator icons do not work, though oddly enough, the Settings icon does work.

Software Updates and BlackBerry ID Settings are not functional in the OS2-style Settings menu.

It appears that BlackBerry Bridge does not work.

The backlight appears to timeout much quicker than the length of time defined in the settings.

Conclusion
If you only have 1 PlayBook, this OS build is definitely not a suitable replacement for OS 2.1. If you have an extra PlayBook lying around, or if you really want to try BB10 on the PlayBook, I will be posting a tutorial very soon with specific setup instructions.
