Here we are in December already… Where did the time go??? We here at NerdBerry want to celebrate the holidays in a HUGE way! Starting today and ending on December 23 we are going to be running a Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!! We have TWO BlackBerry prize packs up for grabs. The two prize packs consist of one T-Mobile Branded BlackBerry Bold 9900 and one 32GB BlackBerry PlayBook!! We have put a lot of thought in to this contest and we have come up with the Holiday Photo Contest!

How do you enter? Of course you MUST do the regular stuff  such as – “Like” our Facebook page, Follow us on Twiter, Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and leave a comment letting us know the top three have been completed…

Because this is such a huge contest we are going to throw in one more thing, don’t fret it is not hard.  All you have to do is take a picture of your current smartphone next to your favorite holiday item such as your Christmas tree, favorite food, favorite ornament, favorite holiday movie, etc.. Send it in to us with a caption explaining why you chose that particular holiday item. Remember be creative, get your family involved after all it is the holidays and most of all have fun doing it!

Submit your photos via email to info@nerdberry.net Using the subject “Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!”.  Photo’s must be received by no later then December 23rd 2012. On December 24th the NerdBerry team will post all of the photo’s and captions received and we will announce the two winners on December 25, 2012.

RIM has just released BlackBerry Push Service SDK v1.0.1 and updated BlackBerry Push Service

What’s new in the BlackBerry Push Service v1.0.1:

• Subscription Check API: A new server side API has been added, which allows you to check the registration status of devices registered with your application.
• Optimizations and bug fixes: Improvements made to both performance and reliability.

What’s new in the  BlackBerry Push Service SDK v1.0.1:

• Support for Subscription Check API: Support for the Subscription Check API has been added, so you can take advantage of it through the SDK APIs. A set of sync APIs have also been added to automatically synchronize subscriber status with the SDK database.
• Statistics gathering: Allows you to better track data regarding push operations (such as push count and remaining quota) and SDK operations (such as memory, thread pools, work queues).
• Improved Query Capabilities: This enables simple retrieval of data pertaining to your subscribers and pushes via user-defined criterion.
• Installer Improvements: Command line installation support has been added to the Linux version.

When Research In Motion released the simulator for the Playbook, they forgot to include a web browser within the simulator. Most of us would have waited until the secondary simulator was released or an update was made to the original.  Well, there is always that person that decides they can’t wait for everyone else to get on the train. Jerome from BBerryGo decided to change this.  He put together his own web browser for the Playbook. Pretty cool idea to be able to throw the browser together and make everything function. Props to Jerome!!!

According to The Wall Street Journal RIM will be unveiling their answer to the iPad within the next few weeks. While many of us were hoping that this would be the big news at DevCon next week, and this report seems to give that rumor a little more footing.

Of course I’m sure that many of you are aware of the rumors that have been swirling around the “BlackPad” or “SurfBook” (or whatever names you have heard), but there hasn’t been any confirmation or leaked specs from RIM. It appears that WSJ is claiming that the QNX OS is almost 100% true, with RIM planning on switching all devices to a QNX OS within the near future.

WSJ is also reporting that the tablet will only connect via WiFi or by tethering with a Blackberry. This is good and bad news, the nice thing is that you will not have to add it to a contract and pay more for your monthly bill. The bad news is that you will have to buy it outright, but if we are lucky RIM will give it a reasonable price point.

It is also rumored that Quanta will be doing the manufacturing and there will be some kind of Marvel engine under the hood. There was however no confirmation on what the name of the tablet will be. There is no doubt in my mind that “BlackPad” is not an option, and I am kinda unsure of “SurfBook”, but whatever the name is I am very excited to see what RIM has thought up for this device.

We all wondered what RIM had up there sleeves when they acquired  infotainment specialist QNX Software Systems back in April of this year.  Well, it looks like today Bloomberg sheds some light on the mystery.   Three separate sources cited in a report that RIM intends to run software designed by QNX on its upcoming BlackPad device.   Its strange to see RIM opting against running its newly released BlackBerry 6 software on the device.  One source in the report says its due to some legacy code still left in, making it easier to start fresh when building the devices software.  I think it will be very interesting to see how this $200 million investment on QNX will benefit RIM in the long run.  It will certainly be the biggest stray from the BlackBerry’s makers norm.
