MTN will start to place data caps on BlackBerry users starting March 1st. MTN made the decision to limit BlackBerry users to a 200 MB/month “fair usage” cap because most of their users fall under this data amount per month. This move was put in place to improve the network experience for all of their users. The plan is named the BlackBerry Absolute plan and is r59/month. The plan will not eliminate the connection to the BIS, BBM, or App World. It will just be limited to the 200 MB limit. Anything over this amount will be deducted from their internet bundle or they will be billed directly for it.

MTN’s statement is as follows:

“The BlackBerry Absolute plan is aimed at optimising the network to make it efficient so as to provide a world-class experience for our customers,” says Devan Chetty, GM: core and Internet protocol planning at MTN South Africa, in a prepared statement.

“It is important to note that the BlackBerry Absolute plan will not limit our customers’ experience and connectivity on their BlackBerry handsets. Our analysis of usage behaviour shows that the majority of our BlackBerry customers fall within the 200MB usage pattern on a monthly basis. This means that those customers who use up to 200MB per month will continue to enjoy BlackBerry features and services.”

There has been a lot of confusion regarding BlackBerry 10 and whether or not you need a BIS/BES account to use the phone. Now that the Z10 is in the hands of a lot of people, and officially for sale in the UK, we can now confirm whether or not you will need a BIS or BES account to use a BlackBerry 10 device.

When it comes to consumers who have previously had a BIS account you will be all set and no need to change your plan, unless you are wanting to up your data package as LTE will make the phone fly. However if you are coming from a iPhone or Android phone you will also be ok to use a BlackBerry 10 device. It turns out that any type of existing data plan will allow you to fully use your BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

There is one caveat for this and that is if you are on an individual feature plan, or plans with segmented data functions like BBM Social plans, you will not be able to use your existing plan on BlackBerry 10. Also remember that if you are on an older BlackBerry or another older device, you will need to get a micro-SIM card to use in your BlackBerry Z10.

Now if you are on a BES server it turns out that you don’t even need a BES plan on a BlackBerry Z10 to connect to BES10. If you are using an older BlackBerry device you will still need a BES plan to connect to the BES server. Basically BlackBerry has made it really easy for enterprise customers to keep their phones as consumer phones and use BlackBerry Balance as the way to keep things separate.

Here is a list simplifying it all (we hope),

Yes you can use any smartphone data plan for the Z10 and Q10

Yes, a dedicated BlackBerry plan will still work

No, you can’t use a feature plan like email only or BBM only

Yes, you need a micro SIM card to use in the Z10 or Q10 (or a iPhone 5 nano card in a micro SiM adapter will work too)

Yes, BES users still need a BES plan

The whole topic of BIS/BES requirements for BlackBerry 10 has not been communicated all that well. Hopefully any changes to what we have determined so far will be made clear to users.

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands–(<a href="http://www.businesswire.com/"itemprop="url" target="_blank">BUSINESS WIRE)–Bell ID® today announced that its Token Manager Software is being used by Research In Motion (RIM) in its Secure Element Manager (SEM) solution for NFC (near field communication) mobile payments.

“With this implementation, Bell ID has proven its capability to provide true carrier grade software, which can support high volumes and high throughput for global multi-application real time token management solutions. It confirms Bell ID’s position in the NFC market as the leading vendor independent software provider.”

Bell ID Mobile Token Manager Software is a vendor neutral software platform used by Trusted Service Manager (TSM) solutions like RIM’s SEM, which coordinates the technical and business relationships of multiple stakeholders to deliver and maintain payment services on a mobile device. Bell ID’s solution provides for over-the-air lifecycle management of applications, cryptographic keys and any form factor secure element on NFC devices. It enables TSM solutions to supply service providers, such as banks and retailers, with the means to securely provision, store and update their credentials and applications on NFC capable devices. By following global industry standards, Bell ID Mobile Token Manager ensures future proof interoperability with other TSMs and third party NFC services.

Andrew Bocking, Senior Vice President, Software Product Management at RIM, commented: “We selected Bell ID for their broad experience within multiple vertical markets and proven technical ability to manage infrastructure complexity. With Bell ID’s Mobile Token Manager Software, we have been able to implement the necessary framework to oversee the secure delivery and management of mobile NFC services to any NFC capable device, including BlackBerry smartphones. As the software is vendor neutral, we have the flexibility to work with any third party provider to manage a global NFC ecosystem.”

Pat Curran, Executive Chairman at Bell ID, added: “With this implementation, Bell ID has proven its capability to provide true carrier grade software, which can support high volumes and high throughput for global multi-application real time token management solutions. It confirms Bell ID’s position in the NFC market as the leading vendor independent software provider.”

The Irish government has announced that it will be dropping support for Blackberrys and in turn they will settle for iPhones and Android devices, according to SiliconRepublic. The switch affects Teachta Dála’s (TD’s) in the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). Irish government officials government, feels that BlackBerry is no longer a cost effective solution to maintain BlackBerry support.

One of the reasons Blackberry support is being dropped is the Oireachtas ICT unit no longer wishes to pay to keep a BlackBerry Enterprise Server running when no such server is required for Android or iPhone devices.

“The provision of support for BlackBerrys carries the additional cost of two separate servers, power, cooling, administration and annual support,” the spokesperson explained.

With these new changes the Irish government has setup a program where officials can buy iPads wholesale and allow TD’s to refund the cost to the Oireachtas. Originally the Oireachtas planned to buy the iPads outright and then distribute them to members, but because of budgetary constraints, the government has decided that they will reimburse the iPad purchases.

Purchasing all new iPads, however, is a budget-cutting move, reports SR:

One of the reasons the Oireachtas Commission appears determined to pursue the rollout of iPads is a ‘print on demand’ strategy with respect to parliamentary documents.

An Oireachtas Commission spokesperson confirmed the move was part of a strategy to reduce print production costs throughout Leinster House.

The idea is that instead of every office or department having printers, a smaller number of strategically located printers around Leinster House and Dail Eireann will be able to detect a member’s iPad via Apple’s AirPrint wireless technology and print a document from the iPad.

Not sure how Government officials will fret with Apple and Android counterparts for the security of BlackBerry, will things change when BlackBerry 10 is released? Only time will tell.

As the headline suggests a post written up by Scott Anthony as part of HBRs Blog Network makes claim that RIM isn’t as dead as the media pundits so love to claim. As he so simply puts, “ [In] September RIM reported that its subscriber base had grown to 80 million from 78 million. The company’s market share is still decreasing, but companies on death’s door don’t tend to report sales growth.” Which leads many to wonder what’s really going on with RIM. Scott then discuss what we all know is BlackBerry’s bread and butter, email. And the advantages it still holds in the market today. And yet “Email” is such an antiquated way to think about it. Scott recognizes this. Within the post he elucidates the true nature of BlackBerry email and why it’s still clearly more advantageous than the competitions offerings. The efficiency with which BlackBerry’s handle data around the world is another advantage that stems from the companies BES/BIS. That same infrastructure is in place, supported by over 55o carrier partners around the world in over 170 countries. This infrastructure no behemoths, Apple nor Samsung can claim. And with Apple’s purchase of Authentec, Samsung is likely on the market for a new security MDM system. One that doesn’t have them writing checks to Apple.
Blackberry has gone flaccid in the consumer perception of the brand since the introduction of the iPhone especially after 2008. While RIM wasn’t innovating the cell phone devices themselves per-say, they were instead penetrating the global markets–embedding their secure network infrastructure around the world, and have made very smart purchases like QNX that with the back-end in place, can take their new BlackBerry 10 platform places the competition cannot go. While other devices can gain onboard encryption to government FIPS standards like BlackBerry’s already are, it would take them years to build the backend BlackBerry has spent years making. And it is the backend that supports secure communications, not the onboard encryption. While government agencies are taking on iOS and Android devices as part of the B.Y.O.D trend, the devices need to connect securely not just to the each other but the networks as well. While RIM has taken to developing countries it also understands better than any OEM out there how people are using their data. I suggest you hit the source link and read up on the BlackBerry advantages and misconceptions, good read.
