Here we are in December already… Where did the time go??? We here at NerdBerry want to celebrate the holidays in a HUGE way! Starting today and ending on December 23 we are going to be running a Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!! We have TWO BlackBerry prize packs up for grabs. The two prize packs consist of one T-Mobile Branded BlackBerry Bold 9900 and one 32GB BlackBerry PlayBook!! We have put a lot of thought in to this contest and we have come up with the Holiday Photo Contest!

How do you enter? Of course you MUST do the regular stuff  such as – “Like” our Facebook page, Follow us on Twiter, Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and leave a comment letting us know the top three have been completed…

Because this is such a huge contest we are going to throw in one more thing, don’t fret it is not hard.  All you have to do is take a picture of your current smartphone next to your favorite holiday item such as your Christmas tree, favorite food, favorite ornament, favorite holiday movie, etc.. Send it in to us with a caption explaining why you chose that particular holiday item. Remember be creative, get your family involved after all it is the holidays and most of all have fun doing it!

Submit your photos via email to info@nerdberry.net Using the subject “Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!”.  Photo’s must be received by no later then December 23rd 2012. On December 24th the NerdBerry team will post all of the photo’s and captions received and we will announce the two winners on December 25, 2012.

The current Desktop Manager will work with Windows 8 as long as you have .NET Framework 3.5 installed and enabled prior to the installation of BlackBerry Desktop Manager.  This is a very easy process and it will provide full functionality until RIM releases an updated version of Desktop Manager for Windows 8 that includes enhanced features.  For all the information on using Desktop Manager on Windows 8 just hit up the source link below.

If such a deal was to go through this would mean that we could see Windows Phone running on BlackBerry hardware. However the RIM board of directors apparently has quite a bit of faith in the power of BlackBerry 10 and have refused any offers from Ballmer and Microsoft. Even though we are now going to have to wait till the first part pf 2013 before we see a BlackBerry 10 device, the higher-ups at RIM truly believe that this new operating system could turn things around.

“We came to the decision that joining the family of the Android players, for example, would not fit RIM’s strategy and its customers,” he said. “We are not trying to be one of many. We’re trying to be different. We’re trying to be the best solution for our customers that buy a BlackBerry, know why they want a BlackBerry. And we’re aiming for nothing less than being a viable, successful, mobile computing platform of the future. This is what we’re aiming at. And I think that’s the difference. If you compare us with others, did we take the hard rod? Absolutely. Absolutely. But having done this and building and completing this new mobile computing platform that then expresses itself as a smartphone or as a tablet or as a vertical application or embedded in cars, whatever you want to do, that is where we will take BlackBerry. And this is – that’s why it was absolutely required and necessary to build its own platform. I would argue the other way around. If I continue to rely on somebody else’s OS and somebody else’s platform, would that allow me in the long run to really differentiate towards my customers and provide them the services and the environment that they request from me and that they would like to have? I have a big question mark around this. So I think going this way and building the platform we are building has the absolute intent to serve our customers and our markets better than on a standard-based OS and platform.”

I for one am glad that RIM is holding their ground and not simply selling out the highest bidder.  I would definitely shed a tear if I were to see RIM sell off all their hard work to simply see Windows Phone 8 be placed on their awesome hardware.

Reuters is reporting that RIM’s board is under mounting pressure to take drastic action. One of the options that it considers, from a source close to the company is to, split the company into hardware and software solutions, and that they should sell off the latter, to such. Meaning those other rival fruit and robotic companions would see such Blackberry services such as Push Email, NOC Services, and possibly BBM.

But another, idea was proposed as well, was the option is to partner up with Microsoft — much like Nokia — and introduce Blackberry Devices to the Windows Phone operating system. According to Reuters, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer proposed this approach previously with RIM:

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had approached RIM in recent months, looking to strike a partnership similar to the one the software giant has with Nokia Oyj, the sources said. Under that partnership, Nokia will use Microsoft’s latest Windows operating system on its smartphones.

In such a scenario, RIM could also look for Microsoft to buy a stake in the company and fund marketing and other expenses, the sources said.

This is now welcoming new RIM however has reported that they are not too keen on losing their assets nor their independence in the mobile market, CEO Thorsten Heins believes in and is optimistic for the success of the new Blackberry 10 Devices to market without having to split nor sell a chunk of Research In Motion.

Personally I do not believe that RIM is seriously considering these options but sources say that they are. It is rumored that RIM needs an outside company to give RIM the bounce back that they need. I personally believe that RIM can and will stand on it on two feet, alone. I, @K_Mart_ tweeted “RIM will remain strong new CEO, new Os, New Blackberry 10 devices they’ll be fine” and this still holds true today.

Now of course we have yet to see the release of BlackBerry 10, so I feel that this numbers will change drastically with that launch.  While the IDC sees RIM and BlackBerry staying relatively stagnant, moving from 6% to 5.95, they believe that Windows Phone is going to see a drastic jump from 5.2% up to 19.2%.  That drastic a jump even puts Windows Phone holding more market share than iOS come 2016, which I can’t see being realistic at this time, but people tend to change their mobile preferences from year to year.

The launch of Windows 8 and Apollo for Windows Phone is definitely garner quite a bit of attention from mobile users, but I am not sure if it will be enough to make people leave iOS and Android for Windows.  What do you think?  Please let us know with a comment.

comScore Reports January 2012 U.S. Mobile Subscriber Market Share

More Than 100 Million U.S. Mobile Subscribers Now Use Smartphones

RESTON, VA, March 6, 2012 – comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending January 2012. The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.4 percent market share. Google Android continued to grow its share in the smartphone market, accounting for 48.6 percent of smartphone subscribers.

OEM Market Share

For the three-month average period ending in January, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.4 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG with 19.7 percent share and Motorola with 13.2 percent share. Apple continued to capture share in the OEM market with 12.8 percent of total mobile subscribers (up 2.0 percentage points), while RIM rounded out the top five with 6.6 percent.

Smartphone Platform Market Share

The number of U.S. smartphone subscribers surpassed the 100-million mark in January, up 13 percent since October to 101.3 million subscribers. Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 48.6 percent market share (up 2.3 percentage points) followed by Apple with 29.5 percent market share (up 1.4 percentage points). RIM ranked third with 15.2 percent share, followed by Microsoft (4.4 percent) and Symbian (1.5 percent).

Mobile Content Usage

In January, 74.6 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 2.8 percentage points. Downloaded applications were used by 48.6 percent of subscribers (up 4.8 percentage points), while browsers were used by 48.5 percent (up 4.5 percentage points). Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 3.4 percentage points to 35.7 percent of mobile subscribers. Game-playing was done by 31.8 percent of the mobile audience (up 2.6 percentage points), while 24.5 percent listened to music on their phones (up 3.3 percentage points).
