AT&T released a statement today saying that you are able to use pre loaded video chat apps on your phone, on their network. This instead of the standard “wifi only” video chats that we are used to. By the end of this year, all video chat apps should work on their network too. BlackBerry is among the group of manufacturers who have enabled this featured to be used already. After all, one of their biggest draws is BBM Video Chat.

The statement is below, which also details who has access to use the video chat as not everyone’s plan would cover it.

For video chat apps that come pre-loaded on devices, we currently give all OS and device makers the ability for those apps to work over cellular for our customers who are on Mobile Share or Tiered plans. Apple, Samsung and Blackberry have chosen to enable this for their pre-loaded video chat apps. And by mid-June, we’ll have enabled those apps over cellular for our unlimited plan customers who have LTE devices from those three manufacturers.

Throughout the second half of this year, we plan to enable pre-loaded video chat apps over cellular for all our customers, regardless of data plan or device; that work is expected to be complete by yearend.

Today, all of our customers can use any mobile video chat app that they download from the Internet, such as Skype.

So those with a Z10 and on AT&T and the right plan should be able to use it.

During the keynote at BlackBerry Live this week Thorsten Heins let us all know that BlackBerry OS 10.1 would start rolling out this week for everyone except the US which is set to start rolling out at the end of the month. BlackBerry OS 10.1 has landed in Australia. Let us know what you think about the update in the comments.
The new BlackBerry® 10.1 Operating System (OS) is now available for download by BlackBerry Z10 smartphone customers in Australia. The BlackBerry 10 update includes new features for the BlackBerry Hub alongside updates to notifications, cursor control and camera.

How to download the operating system update
To update your BlackBerry Z10 smartphone to BlackBerry 10.1, look for the alert in the notifications section of the BlackBerry Hub. You can also check for software updates through the settings menu by visiting the software updates section. The download will happen in the background, so your information remains safe. However, as always, we recommend you have a current backup of your BlackBerry Z10 smartphone readily available. For more information on how to update your BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, visit www.BlackBerry.com/update

New BlackBerry 10.1 OS features include:

BlackBerry Hub

The BlackBerry Hub lets you access all your messages and notifications in one place. With BlackBerry 10.1, the BlackBerry Hub supports PIN to PIN messages for direct communication between BlackBerry smartphones. Plus, improved attachment support in the BlackBerry Hub makes it easier to view emails which have been sent as attachments to other messages.

Notifications

Your BlackBerry 10 smartphone keeps you connected to the people who matter to you with BBM, text messages, personal and work email, social networks and more. With BlackBerry 10.1, you can personalise the notifications for your accounts and contacts so you always know what is happening around you. Customise ringtones, vibration and the LED light by contact or by account for more personalised notifications.

Fine Cursor Control

BlackBerry 10.1 makes it easier and more accurate to pinpoint exactly where you want to type. Tap once to bring up the cursor. Grab the blue circle and drag it around to place it exactly where you need it. Tap either side of the circle to move left or right by just one character. It’s easy to move around with speed and precision.

Camera

BlackBerry 10 lets you create the perfect shot by moving parts of your picture backwards and forwards in time with Time Shift mode. BlackBerry 10.1 adds an HDR shooting mode for beautiful images in tricky lighting conditions. A standard image takes a picture at one exposure level. Where you have high contrast between light and dark areas of the photo, fine details can be lost. High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode takes multiple pictures at different exposure levels and layers them automatically to produce a single photo that combines the best of the dark and light areas.
Lots more to discover: You’ll find lots of new improvements across the BlackBerry 10 OS like landscape support for the calendar, easier international dialing, improved red eye reduction in the picture editor and much more. The first step to discovering these new features is to update your BlackBerry 10 software.

Montreal, Quebec, Canada – May 15, 2013 — GWAVA announces the expansion of Retain Mobile Unified Archiving to include BlackBerry® 10. With Retain Mobile, organizations can securely archive mobile communications for BlackBerry® smartphones. This expansion continues to reinforce the strong relationship between GWAVA and BlackBerry. GWAVA and BlackBerry have been working together for more than five years to provide security and archiving value to BlackBerry enterprise customers.

Thousands of organizations use Retain Mobile for BlackBerry to ensure compliance with archiving regulations, monitor and archive SMS/MMS, PIN, BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) and phone usage data. This archived data can be instantly searched, retrieved and published from one unified archive.

“With the expansion of Retain Mobile, organizations that have migrated to the BlackBerry 10 platform can rest assured that they can maintain compliance with all regulations and monitor and archive mobile communications,” said Ken Muir, Chief Executive Officer of GWAVA.

“BlackBerry values the ongoing relationship with GWAVA as well as their commitment to bringing a high level of data retention capabilities to our enterprise customers,” said Martyn Mallick, VP of Global Alliances and Business Development at BlackBerry.

Many organizations that need to comply with electronic communications regulations, such as FINRA, NCAA, SEC, HIPAA, SOX, FERPA and sunshine laws, are also using the BlackBerry enterprise solution within their organization. Retain Mobile has enabled universities to remain compliant with NCAA regulations. The policy states, “Evolving technology presents unique challenges in recruiting. The NCAA position states new technology can be used so long as it complies with the spirit and, where updated, the letter of already existing guidelines. For example, schools cannot text prospective student-athletes at any time…” Because of these policies, many NCAA universities have completely banned athletic department staff from texting on mobile devices. With Retain Mobile, universities have turned texting back on, and employees can once again communicate effectively and appropriately via text.

May 14, 2013 (Orlando, Florida and South Plainfield, NJ) – During the BlackBerry Live® Conference, CHARGE Anywhere® LLC, a leading developer of award-winning, secure mobile payment (MPOS) applications and payment gateway technology, is demonstrating smart phone EMV payment acceptance by converting a BlackBerry® phone into an EMV point of sale terminal.

The CHARGE Anywhere Mobile Payment solution combines powerful tools to enable secure EMV mobile payment acceptance; any BlackBerry and a Bluetooth enabled EMV/Chip & PIN smart card reader. The CHARGE Anywhere MPOS Payment Application for BlackBerry enables business owners to securely process credit and debit cards anywhere their business takes them. Now, merchants operating on the new BlackBerry 10 platform and BlackBerry legacy devices can accept EMV payments in a mobile environment.

Eighty countries globally are in various stages of EMV chip migration, including Canada and countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia according to EMVCo, the organization responsible for maintaining EMV specifications. Migration towards EMV in the U.S. is expected to begin in 2014.

“In integrating a Bluetooth enabled EMV/Chip & PIN smart card reader with a BlackBerry smart phone, CHARGE Anywhere, continues to lead the way in providing secure, innovative payment solutions. Our experience with the Blackberry platform is evident as we are the first to deliver a MPOS payment acceptance solution for the Blackberry 10”, said Paul Sabella, CEO of CHARGE Anywhere. “CHARGE Anywhere has a legacy of supporting mobile payments on BlackBerry devices dating back to the original RIM 950 two-way pager.”

CHARGE Anywhere provides a turn-key white label mobile payment and payment gateway technology platform that can be leveraged by processors, banks and telecommunication companies. As financial inclusion progress takes hold around the world, CHARGE Anywhere’s white labeled solutions become mission-critical for these organizations to enable such an ecosystem for their consumers (issuing) and payment acceptance (acquiring) merchants.
