With BlackBerry Live set to kick off on Tuesday, we will be flying into Orlando tomorrow to get all set up to bring you the most update BlackBerry coverage. Web Directions is giving away some awesome prizes for developers that bring their web apps to BlackBerry 10

From May 1-3, 2013 the Web Directions Code Conference will be happening in Melbourne Australia, and this year there are some pretty big incentives to work on a BlackBerry 10 app. The BlackBerry App competition is for Australian and New Zealand residents, but you do not have to be in attendance to qualify for the prizes.

Now if you are wondering what exactly those prizes are, they will range from a BlackBerry Z10 to $2,000 in cash and an all expense paid trip to BlackBerry Jam Asia 2013. There are three top prizes, however anyone in attendance will be walking away with some swag whether they win or not. Here are the details on what you have to do to be considered for one of these awesome prizes.

Web Directions Code Blackberry App Competition

To give you just a little more incentive, BlackBerry are holding a competition for Australian and New Zealand residents, with top entrants showcased at Web Directions Code, and some pretty awesome prizes. And you don’t have to be attending Code to enter!

What you have to do

Simply show the world what you can do with the mobile Web.

Create a mobile website or web app (bonus points for web apps)
Submit the publically available link or preferably a .bar app file to csaunders@blackberry.com (with a short description for voters) by noon on May 1^st AEST.

Now if you are not familiar with BlackBerry 10 at all, BlackBerry’s Chris Saunders will be holding a portathon at Web Directions on April 26th from 2pm to 5pm. So don’t be worried if you are not yet familiar with coding for BlackBerry 10, there will be plenty of folks at the portathon that will be able to lend a hand and point you in the right direction.

February refresh of the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK adds In-App Payments and More

The developer team at BlackBerry is continuing to add more and more to the SDK’s for BlackBerry 10. In the February refresh of the WebWorks SDK, BlackBerry has added in the ability to add in-app payments. This is of course exciting new for developers as they are the ones that will benefit most from this new addition.

There is also the addition of some of the BBM social APIs that many developers have been waiting for. The main BBM API that has been added is support for the Profile Box, which will be great for achievement based apps. Here we are in December already… Where did the time go??? We here at NerdBerry want to celebrate the holidays in a HUGE way! Starting today and ending on December 23 we are going to be running a Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!! We have TWO BlackBerry prize packs up for grabs. The two prize packs consist of one T-Mobile Branded BlackBerry Bold 9900 and one 32GB BlackBerry PlayBook!! We have put a lot of thought in to this contest and we have come up with the Holiday Photo Contest!

How do you enter? Of course you MUST do the regular stuff such as – “Like” our Facebook page, Follow us on Twiter, Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and leave a comment letting us know the top three have been completed…

Because this is such a huge contest we are going to throw in one more thing, don’t fret it is not hard. All you have to do is take a picture of your current smartphone next to your favorite holiday item such as your Christmas tree, favorite food, favorite ornament, favorite holiday movie, etc.. Send it in to us with a caption explaining why you chose that particular holiday item. Remember be creative, get your family involved after all it is the holidays and most of all have fun doing it!

Submit your photos via email to info@nerdberry.net Using the subject “Holiday Photo Contest from RIM and NerdBerry!!”. Photo’s must be received by no later then December 23rd 2012. On December 24th the NerdBerry team will post all of the photo’s and captions received and we will announce the two winners on December 25, 2012.

RIM Wants You Showcase Your bbUI.js WebWorks Apps On GitHub

@gcsantiago suggested to Tim Neil from RIM to have developers show off their bbUI.js WebWorks Apps on github.

What he had to say:

I received a great suggestion from @gcsantiago where we could create an area so that people could showcase details about their applications built with bbUI.

This Github Issue will be a place where you can post details about your application, what it does, links to App World or use markdown to reference some screen shots to show off what you’ve done using bbUI. Just add all your details as a comment to this issue.

We want to keep this thread mainly about showcasing your application and not too many back and forth conversations about the applications themselves. Since each post has the github user account of who posted it, feel free to send that github user a message to ask them more about their application.

So if you’ve got an app to show off, head over to github.

WYSIWYG Editor for Cascades

Back in May @alexkinsella put up a post on the BlackBerry Developer Blog about Cascades Builder an extension to the QNX Momentics IDE (integrated development environment). The post highlights how the tool helps developers be more efficient with things like Photoshop integration, source editing and live previews. In typical BlackBerry fashion the post doesn’t stop there, there are hints of things to come in future releases.

We are already working with visual editing; i.e. dragging component into a design canvas where you can layout and rearrange the user interface.

Earlier today Tim Neil, Director of Application Platform & Tools Product Management for RIM tweeted a response in regards to “visual editing”

We’re working through different tooling enhancements. I don’t have any timing to share on a WYSIWYG editor

If you don’t know what, WYSISYG stands for it’s, What You See Is What You Get. While we have no date as to when this tool will be available it’s nice to read about RIMs commitment to tooling. The better the tools the better the outcome, usually. With that said, being able to harness the power of the Cascades framework in a simple easy to use editor that doesn’t necessarily require tons of recompiling for small changes will be a huge time saver for developers. Goes to show just how seriously RIM is taking its developer support, not just about having the tools but having great tools. As BB10 approaches we can except more enhancements to the tools already available and new tools that will help broaden the scope to really give devs the power they need to help make BB10 a runaway success. I hope they make a similar editor for WebWorks!

Developer Community ports BlackBerry 10 WebWorks Packager to Linux

If you give developers enough time they can pretty much do anything. The latest achievement by some members of the developer community is that they have ported the BlackBerry 10 WebWokrs Packager over to Linux. the port is of the latest 1.0.1.17 SDK that is currently available for OSX and Windows, but with a few tweaks will now work on Linux.

Hopefully RIM will look at what the community was able to achieve and make an official Linux packager in the near future. In the meantime you can grab the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks Packager for Linux from the source link below.
