When RIM fully announced all the requirements and rules for the $10K Developer Commitment there was much speculation as to whether or not Adobe AIR apps would qualify. Today RIM has made it clear that Adobe AIR apps will indeed be a part of the developer commitment, which is of course what we expected to hear from RIM in the end. They also reiterated that apps made with any of the AIR tools (BlackBerry 10 SDK for Adobe AIR, NME, Flash Builder) would be included in the program.

You can check out all the information from RIM about the $10K Developer Commitment and other programs here.

today on the BlackBerry DevBlog, Joshua Granick, made the argument for porting Adobe Air to native speed with NME. Personally I was unfamiliar with NME, but basically it is a cross-platform framework for rapid game and application development. Granick makes the argument that developers should really look at NME to get their games ported to BlackBerry 10 with very little work, and with some outstanding results.

The article is a great read, and I suggest you hit up the source link to check it all out, but is an excerpt that shows just how powerful NME can be for developers.

BunnyMark is a popular benchmark for Flash Player. Testing on a BlackBerry® PlayBook™, Adobe AIR rendered 500 bunnies @ 11 FPS. Using NME, the same device rendered an astonishing 5250 bunnies @ 30 FPS. NME applications are significantly faster than AIR (with or without Stage3D) and are comparable to applications built with other native frameworks.

So if you are a developer, or merely interested in the methods that can be used to get some high quality games ported over to BlackBerry 10, hit that link below and let us know hat you think of it all in our comments.

For all you developers out there that work within Adobe AIR, the BlackBerry 10 SDK for Air Beta is now available for download. This SDK will allow for easy ports of existing Adobe AIR based apps, and will hopefully help to bulk up the number of BlackBerry 10 apps available at launch time. While you cannot publish your apps yet, you can get them to the point where they are ready to go when that function becomes available. If you are a developer that works within Adobe AIR I highly suggest you hit up the source link to download the Beta today.

RIM stated at DevCon last week that the upcoming BlackBerry platform named BBX will not support Java. Alec Saunders, VP of Dev Relations and Ecosystem Development, released a statement detailing the reasoning behind to lack of Java support on the BBX platform.

All of Alec’s statements can be read in full on the DevBlog; here is the condensed version of what was said:

While we will continue to support our BlackBerry Java developer community as they build for BlackBerry smartphones, after further investigation we decided against supporting BlackBerry Java on BlackBerry BBX. We concluded that the BlackBerry Java experience on the BlackBerry PlayBook platform would ultimately not satisfy us, our development community, or our customers as the platform continues to evolve.

RIM believes that it would be best to use the BBX C/C++ Native SDK or WebWorks apps moving forward

The Native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook, supporting apps using C / C++.

The WebWorks SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook, supporting apps written in JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS. HTML5 apps will work on both the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphone operating systems today.

It was also mentioned that the future BBX devices as well as the PlayBook will support two different dev communities above and beyond the core super apps. They will be supported thru:

The Adobe® AIR® SDK for the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet, which supports apps built using Adobe AIR, Adobe® Flex®, and Adobe® Flash®.

The BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps, which supports apps written using Android v2.3.

The most important information for the Devs that are focusing on Java development came at the end of Alec’s statements:

So, the next big question on your mind may be: Is this the end of the BlackBerry Java SDK?

The short answer: Absolutely not.

There are currently over 70 million smartphones in market today running the BlackBerry operating system and this number is growing:

The first BlackBerry 7 smartphones were just released, which will sizably increase the addressable market for BlackBerry Java applications.

There are more BlackBerry 7 smartphones yet to come and our customer base will not switch overnight to BlackBerry BBX-based smartphones; both platforms will co-exist for quite some time.

BlackBerry smartphone users are well known for getting long lives out of their smartphones. Even when upgrading to a newer model, older models are often not taken out of service, but are instead passed along to others.

RIM is committed to its BlackBerry development community. BlackBerry Jam is just the start. Developers can expect enhancements to continue on the BlackBerry Java SDK, making it easier and faster to produce money making apps for in-market smartphones running the BlackBerry operating system.

For more information on the various development options for the BlackBerry platform, check out the all-new landing page for developer.blackberry.com, as well as the newly launched microsites for theBlackBerry WebWorks SDK, the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps, and the BlackBerry Native SDK.

Once again if you are interested in reading the press release in its entirety it is available on the DevBlog via the link at the top of the post.

The BlackBerry WebWorks SDK 2.0 for Tablet OS and Smartphones

With this release, the following changes are introduced:

JavaScript APIs are now separated from the OS. This new architecture will allow developers to easily modify and enhance the existing APIs and package them with their BlackBerry WebWorks application. It will also simplify adding new APIs to applications.

The BlackBerry WebWorks framework and all of the APIs are open sourced and are available on GitHub! Developers can now contribute and participate in the evolution of the BlackBerry WebWorks project.

These changes meet developers’ needs for ease of development, flexibility and choice. This important update positively impacts broad categories of developers including new and established developers. They can take advantage of the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK support for web standard technologies (HTML5, CSS3, Java Script) to build rich, well integrated standalone BlackBerry applications. Once developed, these apps can be fully integrated into the BlackBerry ecosystem, and distributed and monetized via BlackBerry App World. Furthermore, there is no need for developers to learn native programming languages to build mobile applications; they can simply use their existing web skills to build amazing BlackBerry apps.

To streamline development work even further, RIM has aligned the versioning of the two platforms so that developers can easily create and deploy applications on the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS and Smartphones – making the best of both worlds.

BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR

Today RIM has also introduced the final version of its BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR which includes the following changes:

Special APIs for the BlackBerry PlayBook Plugins for Adobe Flash Builder

A BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Simulator

A Getting Started Guide

With this update of the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR RIM gives developers the opportunity to leverage a strong competitive advantage, the Adobe AIR technology’s capability to enable developers to share code across multiple platforms, thereby offering them the benefit of a wide choice of development environments.
