BlackBerry World Sees 20% Of Purchases Being Made On Music, Says BlackBerry Exec

BlackBerry has never been big on the music. They tried BBM Music and that was a bust. And when you think of BlackBerry you aren’t thinking about listening to music on it. BlackBerry 10 has obviously changed that way of thinking because music is accounting for 20% of purchases made at BlackBerry World.

This information was found out by Trusted Reviews, who spoke to Charlie Miller during BlackBerry Live. Miller, who is BlackBerry’s Director of Alliances, said “20 per cent of overall purchases on BlackBerry World is music” also saying “That’s just music, not movie and TV and that’s a lot higher than some.” “I can’t comment on the other guys, but what I can say is that proportionally that is a very high number.”

Good job BlackBerry, another point in your favor. The more variety and choices that are available to users at BlackBerry World, the more of a draw it will be. Music was definitely lacking before, I know it annoyed me. And I am sure it turned some people away from BlackBerries too.

The interwebs have been going crazy over the “Keep Moving” commercial from BlackBerry and the ringtone featured in the commercial. I have had the ringtone for quite sometime now and thought a few of you might want it as well. Many have asked for the name of the soundtrack from the commercial and it by the Tame Impala and the album, Lonerism has debuted on Billboard‘s Top 200 Album Chart at #34, the name of the song it Elephant.

Device Switch For BlackBerry 10 Allows You To Transfer Your Contacts From Another Device

Device Switch is now available for BlackBerry 10. Instead of having to manually enter all your contacts into the new phone, you can just download this app and transfer them over. Considering some people have hundreds of contacts, this could save you a lot of time.

Device Switch transfers the following information:

* Contacts (including contact photos, birthdays, etc.)
* Calendar (including recurring entries)

Download Device Switch for BlackBerry 10 from BlackBerry World. Then head to either Google Play or App Store for iOS to get the download for the device switch app for the other phone. You have to have the BlackBerry app and your other phone app in order to transfer the info from one device to the other.

Netflix CEO still hasn’t used BlackBerry 10 – says not enough volume to warrant an app

BlackBerry did a total restart with BlackBerry 10, and many of us were hoping that it would help bring some of the bigger names to the ecosystem. With the Z10 and Q10 now available we have seen numerous big name apps come to BlackBerry 10, and while some like Skype and Kindle have built BB10 apps there are still those that are missing.

Two of the big names that are still missing are Netflix and Instagram. Luckily Instagram has announced that they will be supporting BlackBerry 10, however Netflix doesn’t seem to have any intention of doing so. This has been reinforced even more by a recent interview Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings, gave to CTV News. Hastings made it very clear he believes BlackBerry 10 doesn’t have enough users to warrant them making an official app.

Here is what Hastings had to say in the interview,

CP: You’ve been quoted as saying that you’re always trying out a new smartphone or tablet to keep up on new technology. Have you tried one of the new BlackBerry 10 devices yet?

Hastings: No. Like many people I was a BlackBerry addict from 1997 or 1998 through to the iPhone but I haven’t tried it. We don’t currently support streaming on the BlackBerry, it’s a unique operating system you have to target, and unfortunately there’s just not enough volume for entertainment (apps). It’s a great device for getting work done but people don’t interact with it as an entertainment device the same way they do with say an iPhone or Android phone.

While we hope that Netflix changes their mind and eventually makes an official app, we aren’t going to hold our breath.

BlackBerry shows off a Flex Screen Smartphone Display in latest patent submission

BlackBerry has been busy of late. With he launch of BlackBerry 10, the Z10 and Q10 and soon to be Q5, you wouldn’t think they would have had much time for much else. However in a new patent submission you can see that BlackBerry has been working on flexible screen technology for the future. In this patent you can see that BlackBerry has been working on a smartphone of a foldable design.

According to Blackberry, this future smartphone will be able to maintain a minimum bend radius of the folded flexible display when the smartphone is in the closed configuration so as to protect the flexible display from damage.

We have seen lots of flexible designs coming from multiple OEMs, but BlackBerry looks to be taking a slightly different approach to it, as you can see in the images that there is an area for a physical keyboard, touchpad, gamepad or whatever else can be fit into it.

We don’t expect to see this phone hit the shelves anytime soon, but it is good to see that BlackBerry is looking to the future and thinking of new and exciting designs.

BlackBerry Q5 set to retail at approx. £20.00 a month in the UK

Typically when a new phone is announced there are several prices that get released leading up the official one. Most of the time these prices are place holders for online retailers, but this time the price comes right from Rob Orr (BlackBerry UK’s Managing Director). According to Orr the Q5 will approximately be £20.00 on a monthly tariff.

This will still be over a 24 month contract, but at £20.00 a month the Q5 will be a great deal for anyone looking for a BlackBerry 10 device. The combination of the good price and the multiple colour options should make the Q5 a hit with the younger BlackBerry users out there. Currently the Curve 9320 is the cheaper BlackBerry at £10.00 a month, but for £10.00 more a month the Q5 is the much better buy.

July can’t come soon enough, as we really want to see how BlackBerry and the carriers price the Q5 around the world. Stay tuned as I am sure we will get more information on pricing and global availability within the next few weeks.
