Official OS: BlackBerry Bold 9900 OS 7.1.0.912 from T-Mobile USA

Well, well, well, it is about time T-Mobile USA released an official OS update for the BlackBerry Bold 9900. T-Mobile is rolling out OS 7.1.0.912 for the BlackBerry Bold 9900, now this update is currently only pulling through Desktop Software at this time. I did check T-Mobile’s official update site and it is still showing OS 7.1.0.284.

To pull the OS update simple plug your device in to your PC, open the BlackBerry Desktop Software and check for updates. Let us know if you see anything different in the comments.

Rogers And CIBC Have Invested Up To $60 Million Into Suretap

Back in November, Rogers and CIBC joined together to launch Suretap, the mobile payment system. They claim to be Canada’s first mobile payment system. Currently, both the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Z10 are capable of using this technology with more in the future.

But the road to being first in technology cost them a lot of money. A few days ago, an NFC Conference was held in Toronto. A panel at the conference called “NFC in the Canadian Market” went into more detail about suretap and about the cost to launch it.

Todd Roberts who represented CIBC said “The practical reality is we are very pleased with the response. You have to put it into context of it’s a single device that’s clients are actually using… In terms of numbers, we’re talking in the thousands, not in the tens of hundreds of thousands.”

He continued:

“we had to make a huge bet as to whether or not we are even going to bother to enable NFC payments, let alone be the first to market it. So, think $20 to $30 million is what the nature of the bet is. We entered into discussions with Rogers, call it 2-years ago. They had to make a similar bet to decide if they are actually going to deploy that level of technology in their environment. We’re close friends with TELUS as well, like we’re all going to have multiple friends as we go through this. The reality is when you work it back you have to have both sides of the equation prepared to co-invest, without a business case. There is no business case in the short term. All that can be certain is how much it costs.”

Roberts also confirmed that $60 million is what it cost to get suretap launched and ready to go.

Rogers said in a press release about the number of users who use suretap “tens of thousands of suretap SIM cards are in market and hundreds of thousands of suretap mobile payment-ready devices are being used by Canadians.” No definitive numbers yet, would be nice to know exactly how many people are using suretap.

So was it a worthwhile investment? I think that $50 is kind of low but I guess you do have to start somewhere. Some users may not think it’s a secure transaction and may be reluctant to try it out. Not to mention, there are a lot of places that don’t yet accept suretap.

UK Owners Of BlackBerry Bold 9900 Can Get An Upgrade To The BlackBerry Z10 Through EE

If you are already with T-Mobile UK or Orange, you can take advantage of this offer. There is a catch though, you must have signed onto the contract within the last 6 months. This is a good offer because you won’t be charged for changing the contract, no termination fees. The only thing you will have to pay is the phone contract cost.

Initially when you go to the EE website, the Z10 isn’t shown as part of the promotions. But you can find it listed in the terms and conditions:

This offer is available to current T-Mobile and Orange customers only. The offer is available in our retail stores only and will end on 30 April 2013.

The offer allows you to swap your old 3G phone for a new 4G one, and upgrade your plan to a superfast 4GEE phone plan. To redeem this offer, please note that:

i. You need to be on an existing T-Mobile or Orange plan – whether that’s a new plan or an upgrade/renewal from a previous plan and including plans which were taken out from one of our indirect partners such as the Carphone Warehouse; ii. You can upgrade to 4GEE at any time during your contract with Orange or T-Mobile and there are no charges for terminating your current contract (subject to our 14 day returns policy). iii. You will have to enter into a new minimum term on EE; iv. You can only sign up to a new minimum term on EE which is the same length or longer than your current minimum term on T-Mobile or Orange; v. You can only sign up to a consumer plan on EE with a monthly cost (excluding any out of allowances costs for calls, texts or data) that is the same monthly cost or higher than your current plan on T-Mobile or Orange; vi. 6,000 people participate in BlackBerry’s first “Green Corridor Run” in Singapore

In Singapore over the weekend close to about 6,000 people from across the globe, 71 different nationalities met at Tanjong Pagar Rail Station to participate in the inaugural ‘Green Corridor Run’ presented by BlackBerry! In attendance to the run, guest of honor, Acting Minister for Manpower and Senior Minister of State for National Development, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, joined in to start the 10.5km run.

Samson Tenai, 32, from Kenya and Rosie Clarke, 26, from the UK, won the man and female competition in 34 minutes 11 seconds and 41 minutes 42 seconds, respectively. As a prize for competing in the race both of them walked away with a cash prize of $1,500, and a BlackBerry Bold 9900.

“2013 marks BlackBerry’s ten year anniversary in Singapore so we’re delighted to be the lead supporter for an event that celebrates a unique part of the island’s history. The number of participants that ran the route and showed their support for the cause was overwhelming and fantastic to see,” said Charles Dufourq, Country Director, Research In Motion (RIM) Singapore.

In a statement, RIM says the route “allowed runners to experience one of Singapore’s least known natural wonders and show their support for keeping the area as natural as possible, benefiting generations to come”.

President Barack Obama Can’t Put His Bold 9900 Down

President Barack Obama, was spotted during his 2nd inauguration the other day, sporting a BlackBerry Bold 9900. Even the President of the United States of America cannot put his BlackBerry down for five minutes ! We can only wonder one thing does President Obama already have a BlackBerry 10 device? If so, How does he like it?
