A series of FREE new apps have recently be released allowing access to a plethora of U.S. government content and information right on you BlackBerry or PlayBook. With this series of apps, you’ll get the most current information regarding different agencies including, National Weather Service, TSA, The White House and many others!

Here’s a full list of apps you can download from App World!

For travelling around the United States:

U.S. Government not replacing BlackBerry

Remember a few months ago when we told you that the US government was planning to phase out BlackBerry handsets and start utilizing Android and iOS? Turns out that was a lie, the US government has made some changes and introduced Android and iOS but only to the tune of about 5% total handsets. Sounds to me like there was a smear campaign going on that was responsible for this.

The government has said that they will continue to use the BlackBerry platform because of the security that is built into the phones as well as the cost associated with replacing it.

This is some cool info Gizmodo has posted. The US government has spent $117 Million on BlackBerry devices since 2001. Now I understand why they have spent so much on BlackBerry’s, but why the hell have they spent $10.8 million on iPods, $3.9 million on iPad’s, and so on down the list? We are 14 trillon dollars in the hole and they have spent about 20 million for Playstation’s, Xbox’s and other crap… That just does not make sense. Sorry for the rank…

US Government Shut Down Has Huge Complications For BlackBerry Users

The news has always depressed me, for the simple fact that all they report is the things that are going wrong in the world. I’m sure that most of you have seen the reports on the budget shortfalls that the US government is dealing with. The biggest issue on the situation is the furloughs that governmental employees are facing if a compromise is not reached. With these furloughs all Goverment employees that have Gov. issued Blackberries will be required; by law no less; to shut thier devices off until they return to work. We at Nerdberry have thought about how this is going to be enforced. How exactly are they going to monitor the usage of government BlackBerries????

BB6 gets government approval.

RIM released a press release today stating that the OS BlackBerry OS 6 has been awarded FIPS 140-2 certification. Blackberry devices and now the OS 6 has the highest ranking you can get when it comes to the security and hand held mobile devices. While this doesn’t impact most of us out there it does impact the availability of BlackBerry Devices to government and national security personal.

“FIPS is a U.S. government computer security standard for certifying cryptographic modules. The standard was developed through the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP), which certifies products for use by U.S. government agencies and regulated industries that collect, store, transfer, share and disseminate sensitive information. Product certifications under the CMVP are performed in accordance with the requirements of FIPS 140-2.

“This FIPS certification will help extend the reach of BlackBerry 6 to users in a wide range of government agencies and other security-conscious organizations in the U.S.,” said Scott Totzke, Vice President, BlackBerry Security Group at Research In Motion. “BlackBerry 6 offers an exceptional mobile experience for BlackBerry smartphone users on the most secure wireless platform in the industry.”

This will also help in making os6 more widely adopted. If it’s good enough for the President Obama and the US government then it has to be good enough for the rest of us right?
