RIM agrees to give Intelligence Agencies in India Access to encrypted info?

Wow… Earaler we mentioned that the United Arab Emirates Deem Blackberry as a Security Risk.  Now this RIM agrees to give Intelligence Agencies in India Access to encrypted info?

The one main concern that this brings up is that if the encryption is opened to the authorities it means that there is a potential for others to access it illegally.

“Makers of BlackBerry have assured the ministry of home affairs that the issue of monitoring will be sorted out soon. I am sure we will soon be on the same page and our concerns will be addressed,” special secretary (internal security) in home ministry U K Bansal told reporters on the sidelines of a conference organised by FICCI here.

The government has already warned RIM that if it does not comply with the formats that can allow monitoring of emails and SMSes to address security concerns, it will have to close down operations in the country.

Bansal said the department of telecommunication was the nodal authority which made policy and it was working to address the issue raised by the home ministry.

BlackBerry’s server is based in Canada where the encryption level is very high and extremely difficult to crack. Any message going through the Canadian server is encrypted and, therefore, cannot be accessed by intelligence agencies in India.

This is one of my favorte parts:

Are we opening PANDORAS BOX???????????????

I think this is pure bull… no one else has access to RIM’s info… what makes India so special??? I think RIM should stand their ground and not give in to these bully tactics… If they suspect someone of being a risk then yeah give them information pertaining to that person alone, but to give them full access to ALL info? Just plain stupid IMO. They’re just asking for someone to learn how to crack their encryption.

I do not agree with this move at all, who the hell does the UAE think they are? If this actually happens I may have to make the jump to a different device, I DO NOT want my data compromised and RIM just opened the door for that to happen.

Are we saying that the US does not have access to the data. Hockeyshaun you can jump to different device and i dont think it would matter because at the end of the day its a million people against you. i think every country has a right to the information being passed on in their countries for security and safety reasons. UAE is a very safe country because the authorities make sure all the necessary steps are taken to ensure that. i am addicted to my blackberry but i also stick by UAEs decision to ban it if they cannot have access to the information.
once RIM allows them access to the information it is a great responsibility on the authoritites to guard that information.
