With CES starting in two days and the amount of expected LTE devices for Verizon, we can look again into the idea of Blackberry getting a 4G radio. While RIM has stated that they will not be releasing a 4G device until there are processor and battery management capabilities for it, it would be nice to see something in 2011. In his appearance on “D: Dive Into Mobile” Mike Lazarisdis explained that they are currently looking at making sure RIM is there to bring “pure communication” devices to the world. He made the point that many parts of the world still do not have 3G, so why would RIM develop devices solely for North America.
However we must expect that RIM has something in the works, while many may think the “Monaco” or “Onyx II” might have 4G radios in them, that seems unlikely. “Expected launch for 4G BlackBerry smartphones is the end of this year. Currently, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have their 4G networks up with a list of a devices that support the fast network.” Obviously we would like to see Blackberry get themselves in on the 4G game, but do we want them to rush something out? I say no, but it does seem that RIM/Blackberry are falling a little short compared to other platforms when it comes these new networks.
